So this is not product specific. But it is something that I am wondering about. Maybe someone can give me a tad more detail? Does the Taco seem to underperform in the MPG department? And if so why? I know the flex fuel/eco boost and all that stuff exist, but I don’t understand it well. And is there a reason a taco doesn’t have it?

    mJust wondering lol

I have no issue getting 20+mpgs with the 4.0, my buddy gets around 18 in his sierra and my brother was lucky to get 14 on a good day with his ecoboost f150 when he had it.

Toyota doesn't use fancy electronic aids that tend to fail just to boost mileage. Bad enough they have VVT. Don't worry though, it's coming as more and more people gripe about mileage.

Or mileage may be moot in a couple years because 'electric'. Place your bets now in the stock market.

That is actually a good explanation. And this is from an interview with their chief engineer:

"I can't make a 2.0 liter engine pull 12,000 pounds responsibly. I have to think of a way to solve the problem looking at the economy, environment, and buying carbon credits isn't a long term solution. We may seem slow to advance our US truck offerings, but I have to make a truck that is reliable everywhere in the world. A truck engineered for US customers may not need to survive the Australian outback...but the trucks could. You can go anywhere in our brand."

I get between 16.5 and 17.7 on the regular with 265’s and 200ish pounds of steel bumpers. One thing people don’t always take into account is hills... I have a few hills that I have between me and my workplace, 30+ miles away. Also my afternoon rush hour drive sucks for the first 10 miles(usually nothing more then 30 on a 55mph freeway)

    This is for 99-00 models
I get 17-18, maybe 19, maybe 15 in both my Sienna and Tacoma.

I have a 2010 Odyssey that used to get 23 or so on hwy. I turned off the cylinder deactivation management system as it is known to cause long term problems and now my hwy. mileage is...…….17, 18 maybe 19, maybe 15 depending. Speed, load, weather, fuel blend etc.

They learned from their forays into turbo models (the older Supra and MR2's) that reliability took a big hit.

So many things can play into mileage .

If I was worried about mileage I would not have a 4wd Tacoma.

I checked it on a normal day as long as it does not drop into the single digits it works for me .

I need the truck to haul goodies

    Yes it under performs.

Why? Because Toyota has not made MPG a priority in their trucks. It's really that simple. Toyota sells trucks regardless, so why spend money caring?

    2018 2x4 SR5 Double Cab gets 21 MPG

2019 4x4 Sport Double Cab gets 20 MPG

Mt transmission in the 18 stays in 6th better than the 19, but still no complaint on mileage

It isn't hard to exceed 25 mpg with a 4x4 4 banger and 5 speed in normal driving. I am content.

I joined this forum because of this specific issue. I have a 2020 TRD offroad 4x4. Around town it gets fair mileage. But take it on the freeway, the mileage Tanks big time. Im getting 14.9-16.5. Empty, towing nothing. The toyota dealer says thats the way it is. Never had i had any vehicle get worse mileage on the freeway than city driving. Is this a transmission issue (Yes even though the dealer said they fixed the goofy shifting, this thing will stay in lower gear way too long, and I have to manually upshift at times) Any others with similar experiences/trouble shooting advice?

It has to do with the speed you drive. These vehicles get reduced gas mileage over 60-65mph.

It takes more power to make a vehicle go faster. So you will use more gas. This gets more prevalent the heavier and less aerodynamic the vehicle is.
When the EPA tests for highway mileage are done, vehicles are driven an average of 45 mph. It's really testing the lack of stopping and idling NOT speed.

For me 70mph and up my mpg falls off a few. But I'm ok getting 17/18 and making better time

My current average mileage is in my signature (though the photo is way outdated).

My truck is heavy. Bumpers, winch, armor, and a bunch in the bed.
Speed doesn't help. All of our roads are 70+, one of our toll roads is 85...

I can get about 16 if I keep it below 65, but that just doesn't happen.

Also, be wary of people who make MPG claims without data. Fuelly is a great app to actually track MPG over time, not the fairytale "I want to get 18, so that's what I'll claim" bullshit.

Fuelly blows. They are just another service that whores out your GPS location to data brokers.

I'm sorry they hurt your feelings. I disabled GPS and other things for the app, but if you don't want to use it, that's okay too.
