I have an Optima yellow top battery that has been great. Yesterday, I put the battery on charge and I hear a hissing noise. Turns out there is a small crack in the plastic. It is only doing this when charging - not sure if it happens while alternator is charging.
What should I do? (It's over 4 years old so no warranty)
    - just buy a new one
    - try to melt a the plastic back together without making a bomb
    - put it in a metal case and let it leak out slowly
    - JB weld
    Anything else work better?

Replace it as battery acid is very caustic and will damage everything it comes in contact with.

If it was hissing, you’ve lost water (well acid), so even if you fix the crack, it’ll die in no time as you have no way to add water.
Just replace it with the battery of your choice and be glad you caught it in time. Plus check vehicle thoroughly for any sign of damage from the acid leaking. Neutralize, clean & re-paint any area as needed. Ie pull the battery tray and check the metal under it. A Spray down of water mixed with baking soda in the area it would have leaked, wouldn’t hurt anything even if you see no damage.

Nothing on your truck works without a battery. Why do people try and go cheap on the single most important part of their vehicles?

    Are ya kidding?
You got 4 good years out of it, there can't be some kind of weird emotional attachment.

I can't figure it out either, like trying to get another $8 worth of mileage out of those old worn out, dry rotted, cracked tires.

Get a proper flooded lead acid battery like your truck came with. These various “high tech” batteries are all bunk. They don’t work with the charging system your truck came with, which causes them to have short life and be generally less reliable than a good flooded battery.

my two cents. I work with battery systems all the time and would never put an AGM or gel battery in my truck.
