I was a kid on the farm and innocently asked why we didn't eat the groundhogs my dad shot.
My Mom said she wasn't gonna cook groundhog.
My Dad laughed and said Grandma would.
    And she did.

As I remember it, it's similar to rabbit but more flavorful in a not so good way.
Thankfully, Grandma made it in a pot pie, so it was tolerable.

I may also have had raccoon, but I'm not sure.
We always had a big patch of sweet corn and my dad laid out traps and often caught them.

    Story time. :)

One time I accompanied my Dad to pick some sweet corn and check the traps for a coon.
Oh, we found one alright, a big one.
He'd destroyed a bunch of corn before he was trapped.
There he was, hissing at us in the midst of the destruction.
That made my Dad really mad, and instead of just popping him with the .22, he wound up and kicked him.
Big heavy work boot, but NOT steel toe.

That coon took a big bite right through the boot and down to the bone on Dad's big toe.
He wouldn't let go and my Dad was yelling and trying to shake him off.
Finally he let go and was shot.
    The end.
But boy, I remember it vividly.
