So went to rotate the tires today and this happened. Strange because I hand thread them in and use a breaker bar no impact here....

Any one else run into this ? 20200322_152004.jpg

83ft pounds is really easy to go over with a 24" breaker bar. How much elbow grease did you use?

Used a 18" and just sit into it slightly , I did see 83ft pounds after this happening soooo I guess I'll have to use my torque wrench from now on. I've done this the same with my s10 for years and no problems.

83 lb ft is not much. Better off using torque wrench. Question is now have any of rest of them been weakened from using breaker bar?

I've never broken a wheel stud. Front or rear?

Yeah thats weird. Were they on plenty tight? I'm wondering if maybe something was loose and the studs were being worked back and forth as the tire rotated.

I have snapped about 5 of mine in the same fashion. The dealership over torqued mine for the first 50k on the truck, and when I started doing my own maintenance I snapped 1-2 studs the first few times WHILE using a torque wrench set at 84 ft lbs. I thought my torque wrench was off, so I used a brand new commercial one (with calibration certification) from my work the second time I did rotation and still snapped 2 with it.
Luckily, you can feel when the stud starts to twist and can back off the lug nut, and replace the stud without having to replace the lug nut because the stud broke off inside of it.

So if you put half your weight into an 18" breaker, you're doing ~100lbs per 1.5 feet = ~150 foot pounds.

Basically, sounds like you have been doubling the torque...
