I miss the rear fog function of my rovers and Audi’s and thinking the new @Baja Designs s1 may be a contender if I can order with a red lens. Would probably flush mount in my ARB Summit rear bumper.

curious if it will be too bright. I can’t find any true specs on what the wattage would be for vehicles with these built in. Perhaps a diffused lens would be most appropriate too. Ps I’m not the guy driving with this on all the time. But in shitty weather it’s a great safety feature I’ve always utilized.

    TIA for thoughts.

They dont offer lens colors for now, I already asked.

They're pretty bright, and would likely serve the purpose though.

You could use one as a rear dust / fog lamp, I’d definitely go with a diffused lens. Amber or red if they sell them. I would like to replace my Amazon led pods with some amber s1’s for my dust lights.

However, I would not use them on road. Way to bright.

I want bright. But down low where a rear fog is supposed to be located- as to no shine in the line of direct sight of vehicle behind you approaching. I don’t want to get my question confused with a rear dust/chase light which are typically amber and mounted high up on a vehicle.

if no red lens is available I wonder if I could tint temporarily.

Ok, I was picturing a chase light.
Never heard of a rear fog light before.

My only concern still, is that s1’s or any non dot/sae legal light have no cut off lines for the beam. They would still leak light upwards into eyes even if low mounted and aimed low.

These pods are legal, and can be flush mounted in a bumper. I’ve heard good things about them too.

Get some red tint film and put them behind the lenses, as I believe the pods are rebuildable.

I think the term “rear fog” is what manufacturers call them but they aren’t meant or designed the same as a front aux fog lamp. You may have seen a vehicle with one on before and not known it. Usually it appears that the drivers side brake light is lit up but the vehicle is traveling at say highway speed and not using its breaks. In my rovers, VW and Audi’s the drivers side rear lamp housing has a specific socket just for this bulb that can be activated by the driver if the headlights are on.

The S1 is a bright little light (2375 lumens a piece, 20 watts), and it was intended for off-road use only. It sounds like a really cool project, but I'm afraid it would be too bright. Even with the diffused portion, it shoots glare upwards for a smooth transition. This is ideal for an off-road application to benefit the driver. As of right now, we don't offer a colored lens because of lack of demand. We only have clear and amber. Amber would only be available in wide cornering.

Does a less bright lamp exist? I know the s2 comes in red and flush mount. Maybe in scene configuration?

We have two different lights that are not as bright. The S2 Sport (1,130 lumens) and Rock Light (400 lumens). Both are available in red. But like I mentioned in the previous response, these weren't designed for on-road use. The glare is where we're going to have an issue. It will blind vehicles behind you. If you plan to mount it on a U-bracket, you can adjust the beam downwards. But I don't think that accomplishes your goal. If you plan to flush mount it, there's no adjustment because of the mounting surface. With the work/scene configuration, it projects a 120 degree circle beam pattern. Which means it shines light in every direction. That would be used on top of rack, as a camping light or on a rear bumper as a backup light. We don't really have a product that would do exactly what you're describing unfortunately.

Here's some more information on the beam patterns.
