I was thinking of using fuel from my truck for emergency use in my portable generator. What would I have to do electrically to use the truck's fuel pump to move fuel to a 5-gallon gas can? I see where I can disconnect the fuel line in the engine compartment.

If I was really wanting to do this, I'd get a hand pump (or electric) from a hardware store suitable for pumping fuel. I'd leave the truck fuel pump alone.

Using a generator probably means you are going to be out in the country somewhere... wouldnt want my fuel pump to die while I was out there.

I looked at the bed mounted tanks from Aluminum Tank Industries. That's a possibility. It would take care of the problem of having a low tank when the fuel is needed for the generator.

There's another member that posted on here about a year ago needing to empty the tank. He was stationed on the Azores and the gas station put diesel in the tank. In the end, I belive, he disconnected the fuel line under the hood and jumped the fuel pump relay. That allowed the pump to empty the tank. In an emergency situation, that would get gas for the generator. I'd only get about 2 days constant running, tops, with a full tank in the truck on my generator...

I would mount one of these in the bed somewhere...

Take up very little room and not relying on the gas in your truck.

I just confirmed what scottalot posted. It is possible to get a 1/4" diameter, semi-rigid, piece of tubing into the gas tank. You do need to rotate it to get it past the anti-siphon device.

It's not as simple as just jumping the fuel pump relay, the circuit opening relay also needs to be energized which only happens when the engine is running so you'd have to jumper that also. There is also the premise of whether you'd want the fuel pump to run at low or high speed.

Mod's include-- ONE upper left ball joint replacement, many mufflers, lots of tires and oil changes. ALL ORIGINAL. Owned for 13 years now.........
Take filler tube off tank, use long screw driver to knock/destroy the anti siphon thing in the tube, it won't get thru the filter sock, and then use a shaker hose or a reg hose and siphon it out.

.Just did it tonight to get diesel out off tank (oops, covid19 makes us use improperly cans for fuel). On my 2002 2.4, 2wd five speed taco, sit on ground beside truck and reach in with 10 socket to undo hose clamps, and strong grip required to twist it loose off off tank. I took the...splash/spill guard thing off by filler cap so I could see.
