Don’t give me an excuse to buy another chainsaw...

As others have mentioned, doing my part to be a good member of our democratic republic and laying low for the benefit of those more vulnerable folks among us. Looking forward to getting out when the getting is good.

    Until then, be well.

Working on my SketchUp skills whenever I have a chance to take a break from work. BIG TIME upgrades for the truck storage, moving my second battery back to the bed of the truck so that I can move the winch solenoid into the engine compartment up nice and high so I can winch across the Columbia River. Amazing what you can find in the 3DWarehouse, like an Optima YellowTop that appears to be a group 34 size, exactly. So I'll have to replace my little 50 ah AGM battery with one of those.

My ultimate goal, through continued efforts on this front and my burgeoning welding skills, is to make my own damn GoFastCamper, and I'm going to do it. But in the meantime, looking forward to more storage. I just have to finish the details on the drawer slide kitchen system deal, which I was inspired by right here at Tacomaworld (https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-diy-camping-drawers-pic-heavy-thread.554249/), but I didn't want the drawer slides to be so long and extend so far out, more weight, etc. so my entire slide section starts as no more than a 24" section of the box and extends to 66", just perfect to cover with a tarp. How's it looking?

I’m guessing you’ve found your way over to ripcord’s build then? Tons of great info over there.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/how-to-diy-wedge-camper.604686/

I picked up his plans and am getting ready to build one this summer. Gonna make some tweaks for exactly how I want it but really stoaked to get going on it. Between his plans and the build thread (the bill of materials spreadsheet is crazy thorough) it makes the task seem a lot less intimidating.

Oh damn, I found a thread on Expedition Portal that looked damn near identical but this thread might be even better. Could be the same guy. Love to check out the build when you're starting/in the middle of basically anytime before you're finished! Good luck!

I can’t remember if he did a build on expo but this was his second optimized build based off what he learned with the first one. He documented the first one but was way more detailed on the V2 build thread.

The more I’ve gone down the research rabbit hole the more I’ve realized there’s quite a few people building their own.

And I’d be happy to show you the work in progress once I get going. Right now I’m just brushing up on my welding skills before starting the spaceframe. I did a ton of welding in college but it was mostly TIG so I’m practicing up on my MIG right now.

I don't know a damn thing about TIG and I'm alright with MIG. Bought his plans, made my Sketchup model yesterday. I'm guessing that like Adobe Creative Suite there are a billion hot keys and shortcuts that would make this easier, but it's pretty darn good, matches the measurements exactly. I'd like to take the plans and have a shop cut/notch the square tubing to make welding it together a breeze, Aside from the space frame, its not wildly complicated. On that note that means there will be a fully restored Wildernest with all SS hardware and a brand new canvas tent sewn by Canvas Replacements in Loyal, WI for sale in the near future ;) I can't decide if I should sell the nest to light a fire under my ass, or try to build this first then sell it. Obviously selling first helps the pocket book...

I'm facing a similar dilemma with my camper shell. I figure I'll probably weld up the space frame first because that's the labor intensive but cheap material wise part. Once that's done sell the shell and use that to bankroll the wedge.

Nice work on the model! That's not a bad idea having a shop cut the tubing, the miter cuts are one part I'm not looking forward to. I was probably going to pick up a chop saw to help with the task. No way in hell I'm doing all those cuts with a grinder. If you get some quotes on the cutting/notching let me know what they look like, I might have to consider that option.

Anybody been out to Tillamook State Forest since the closure? Or anywhere for that matter? I've been looking for more details online but the TSF blog hasn't been updated since before the stay at home order. Right now the blog says established recreation sites, campgrounds, and bathrooms closed but trails and roads are open... but that was posted 3/19. I'm just looking to get out of the house and cruise around some next weekend to test out my new hammer hangers.

    https://tillamookstateforest.blogspot.com/

I also looked at the Gifford Pinchot Forest order and it is straight up closed, they even posted a map showing the closure which is the entire Forest with the order saying you are in violation if found driving on any forest roads.

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd716754.pdf

The Mt Hood Order doesn't seem quite as strict saying that all recreation sites are closed but doesn't say anything about forest roads.

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/mthood/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD716555

Anybody been out? Recommendations? Just wanna get out and take in some views for an afternoon.

well I guess this helps answer my own question, sounds like roads are still okay:

    https://www.oregon.gov/odf/Pages/COVID-19.aspx

"The Executive Order does not close the state forests. Dispersed (non-developed) camping, trails (including OHV), and target shooting remain open."

ya rumor has it the trails are still open at Browns and you can still disperse camp. MT Hood forest sounds like it’s totally shut down

New resident to the Portland area. We drove in about 2 weeks ago. All the way down 26, anything that was dirt that connected to that highway had a road closed signs.

Drove through Tillamook last weekend and in areas you had full lots and cars parked along the roads. Saw what looked like a Range Rover group heading to trails, a few smaller groups of jeeps.

Still very new to the area so I might be way off as far as specifically where your talking about but the general sense was Hood = ghost town and closed, Tillamook = busy and open. Just my quick observations.

How’s everyone doing? This pandemic has gotten crazy! I know I thought at the start I’d be doing lots of back road driving and social distancing. Hard to believe there is very little area to go that’s open now.

Had a good night camping at TSF. Of course ran into Tim airing down at Rogers Camp. small world. I was posted up in the middle of Hogs Back trail. Lots of traffic and gun shooting in the quarry below. would like to get further out next time. I wasn’t planning on doing much trails this weekend but ended up having to go into Hogs Back and rescue a dirt biker who hit a tree and broke his leg. He is super lucky i was there. Turns out traction boards make for great leg braces! got a nice gouge on the new sliders trying to squeeze through those big rocks at the entrance. 2+ hour ordeal should hopefully have some good karma coming my way. might try and get out again this weekend too.
