Seeing dogs loose in the bed while slowly cruising property, trails, etc. doesn't pose the same dangers as driving around town or on the highway.
So, I'll leave this up to the judgement of the owner.

Around town and highway... anything other than a crate is just irresponsible.

On trails is one thing, I was talking about tying them in the bed and hopping on the highway.

I mean, they really only jump out once. Specially on the highway

My dogs are trained to jump in and out on command. Never have they done one or the other without being commanded to. Maybe some dogs are just stupid. But the owner will never admit it because it's "their" dog & "their" dog is the best dog... It's just like a parent will never admit that they have a stupid kid. And there are plenty of stupid kids.

yes I did compare a dog to a child. I care and love my dogs as much as I care and love anyone in my family. The notion of “it’s just a dog” I find highly absurd.

dogs have emotions and personalities. They feel things, if someone’s going to own a dog they should provide for the dogs needs or not own the dog.

I did a similar set up. I used a harness instead of a collar to keep the dogs from slipping out of a collar.

I used to chain my two labs in the back of my old Toyota, they both died of old age.

I have this same type setup. I made it for the dog. Now it's always there to hold stuff in place

Well, I find the notion of comparing a dog to a human highly absurd. It's a pet, not a person... & providing for their needs?! Wouldn't training them not to jump out of the bed of your truck be providing for their needs? The article even states that "most" dogs are smart enough not to jump out. So that just leaves the stupid ones. Train your dog.

My dogs are highly trained and they still won’t step foot in the bed of a truck not in a crate.

you going to train every driver on the road to not rear end? The dog itself isn’t the only factor.

Drives me nuts when people put pets up there with humans. When my dog can work and provide for me, we'll talk. Until then, it's a pet.

My dad threw me in the back of the truck all the time. Some of my best memories are cruising around in the bed on a summer day. Even better was getting airborne when he hit the railroad tracks. We were given guns at an early age, we raced and flipped go carts in elementary school (before roll cages), we jumped off of the roof for the hell of it, liked to fight our buddies for fun, and did a lot of "dangerous things". I am thankful every day that my parents were "negligent". It built confidence and taught me how to balance risk. Hopefully, I can be just as "wreckless" with my kids. However, I think we should keep the dogs tied up.
