Will do. I also picked up that amp bypass wiring harness the APH-TY04. Since I put in the new HU I want to get the Kickers off that amp since the impedance doesn’t match and I can’t tell they don’t respond well. Loud as hell but the sq isn't there yet obviously.

I honestly expect I will want at least a good mono amp to power the sub but who knows.

I too installed Infinity Reference speakers in my front and back doors, however, until now, you are the first to post an acceptable dash speaker for the JBL system. That said, please define "slight modifying" when you replaced the OEM JBL speakers with the 3.5" Infinity REF.

    Thanks in advance!

I actually got the idea from another member here, I don’t remember who(sorry).

    Here’s what I did
    1. Trimming is required in order to fit the larger speaker. Or else it will fit crooked/slanted. But not much. I used a utility knife only because I didn’t want to run to the store for new discs for my dremel.

    2. Only one bolt will line up so you’ll need to tap one new hole to secure it in place. I used self tapping since it’s plastic.

    3. The speaker grill will require the plastic pipe to be removed to clear. Use a little blade or dikes to clip the plastic rivets and they pop right out.

extra credit - create some foam baffles in between speaker and and speaker grill. This will help with clarity.

everything fit nice and snug. Nothing vibrating or anything. I did have to cut the old 2 pin plug from the factory speaker and solder on the new Infinity speaker.

well i did get a pair of Memphis Audio 2.75 in speakers in today and put them in the factory spot. they sound great and added just enough midrange to the front. i also got creative and installed the 2 sets of tweeters one in the back door and one in the front. i didnt want to cut the actual door panels so i improvised.

I greatly appreciate your detailed install instructions! Not only will your instructions help me, but I am sure it will guide many others that are considering replacing their dash JBL speakers. Thanks again!

I installed the sub. It does have some more punch. BUT with the extra punch come nasty rattling. I spent yesterday installing deadener and insulation on the back wall. I’m going to also put insulation inside the back of the two plastic covers next. I will be doing the same to all the doors as well.

I order 2 amps to replace the JBL. It is genuinely garbage beyond the factory speakers IMO.

If I had to do it over I would have ordered everything at once. The amp is the only thing left that is factory and is clearly the weakest link.

Does anyone know the polarity on the factory JBL dash speakers?

Installed these Kicker 3.5" dash replacements last night. Easy & straightforward install. Took a page out of @TacoManOne book, and cut the factory connection from the old speaker and connected it to the new 3.5"s. Essentially making them plug and play. Everything works perfectly. Sound is much crisper/cleaner upfront. I will just need to go back in to make the opening larger so that I can fasten both sides down (held down by one bolt right now). I also noticed you only need a flathead to get the cone off of the factory speaker grill. The tabs will break clean off. Easy install for any JBL owners looking to upgrade the sound coming out of the dash.

Just an FYI and I don't know if anyone has posted this, but you do not have to take off the pillar trim to access the tweeter covers. The tweeter covers will come right out if you just pry them up.

I was thinking the same thing last night when I did mine. I defaulted to removing the pillars because that's what I had seen everyone else doing. After it was all opened up, I questioned to myself how the pillars would get in the way of the grill coming off.

Now I'm just searching for a woofer to replace the 6X9. Putting a 2way or 3way seems redundant.

IMHO I like having mids and tweets in one speaker. I went with the Kicker DS line for my 6x9s and 6.5s. Although, (I'm assuming the way JBL is wired for the front) the 6x9 only uses mid regardless if it has a tweeter and the dash only uses tweeter regardless if there is a mid. I could be wrong though. Just the way it sounds to my ears.

I think you are correct. That's why I am looking at a DSP or DSP/Amp combo with a JL 10" sub.

@CT18Tacoma Do you have any photos of how you connected it? (4 to 2 wires)

Sorry man I don’t. I do know that I paired off to 4 wires into to 2 pairs. Meaning I just paired the 2 + and 2 - together.

I used the male connector I scored from a member (non JBL 4 wire) and spliced that into the (JBL 2 wire) female connector off the JBL tweeter. Make sense?

There isn’t an adapter available, so I just modified the factory wiring on the factory midrange speaker. That way I don’t have to cut the body harness side.

Can’t tell you which is +/-, I used a tone generator to figure that out.
