    where do i start...

I've been having trouble finding any genuine 1st gen's that have survived the salt monster in my little corner so am expanding my search to the other wintry parts of the USA

is there anybody in Ohio in the same boat as I ?, a genuine & authentic 1st gen survivor?

i don't recall seeing TW alerts so my apologies for delayed reply, i am serious about this

this is what i found at my local salvage yard in Omaha ... a '97 reg cab v6 (240k miles) that is a month older than my truck and has been registered here every year for 22 years

Toyota says my state does not have a winter problem and there is no cause for me to be concerned
i had no idea that it all comes to this at the end until i saw it first hand!

this truck was not eligible for frame replacement so perhaps the owner at the time (its had at last 3 from a Vin autocheck i did) was not aware of the problems (such as I was about 10 years ago) or had forced the dealer to check and decided against the 'generous' payout

so you have worse or better looking Tacoma's on the roads in Ohio?
i honestly have never seen such as this one before

they don't use that stuff here on an every day basis but they certainly do use it before a freezing rain cometh, time takes it tolls
this past winter here there was an inch of ice buried under a foot of snow they had to flood the main roads with some real nasty stuff to destroy that ice

are you still sporting the original frame?

What i was saying is that this thread was for 1st gen survivors in Ohio.

With that said, we do have equal looking tacomas/trucks here in Ohio. Some are rotted as hell like your post and some are in perfect condition. It can be a hit or miss. But it's not just a Toyota frame thing. I've seen GM's and Dodge's that are almost that bad as well. It's a part of driving something made out of steel on a road that can get salt and water on it.

@tacforce i thought that frame coating was supposed to prevent that from happening?

i had mine undercoated when i bot it new in 1997, but it was a very thin coat and not on all parts of the frame, just the outside and underneath

before TW I was never educated on all of these bad frames out there, so am trying to figure out what to do to keep it from getting any worse
so far all i have found is surface crust but a lot of it was underneath the rubbery undercoat which all just peeled off this year due to age i guess

i am still unclear as to exactly why that starts on the inside way in the back where it slants upwards
do the drain holes get plugged up from de-laminating paint on the inside and water and stuff just sits around not being able to drain properly?

I've got 3 first generation survivors in Cleveland. (L) to (R) The first one is an '01 2.7 4X4 manual with 145,000 miles. The middle one is a '03 2.7 Auto with 284,000 miles. The one on the right is one I just picked up. A little '03 2.4 5 lug 2WD Auto with only 69,000 miles.

    IMG_4499 (2).jpg

Its super hard to keep any vehicle in an environment like Cleveland in decent shape especially three with Tacoma frames.

We have salt mines under Lake Erie, so salt is cheap and plentiful and local municpalities pour it on thick like an employee working the fryer at McDonalds.

I've had to Safe-T-Cap the '01 in a couple places, but its holding up well. The '03 with 284,000 miles amazingly has the best frame of the three. I'm going to fluid film the internal cavity of the box frame on that one shortly. The little '03 2wd is really nice. The only negaitive is some prior owner sprayed foam inside the box frame which did nothing but attract moisture. That foam is coming out and it will also get a fluid film treatment shortly.

I try to keep these trucks well maintained. I see a lot of value in them. They are simple and reliable. Manual roll up windows and manual locks. A real "key" to start each truck. What more could I ask for?

I didn't think I'd like the little 2wd, but its great for running around town on small errands.

Sorry, for not seeing this sooner. I'm not on the forums as much as I should be these days.

I've routinely kept my frame clean on my '04 Taco. I'm the original owner and bought it back in December of '03 when I lived in San Diego. It spent most of it's life between CA and AZ before I moved out to Ohio in 2014. I learned quickly about the salt on the roads and make a routine effort to clean off the frame at least once a year. My Taco has 201,000 miles and I hope to drive it for another 200,000.
