Are 285s worth it?

If you're on the fence and think you like larger tires, then get them. Otherwise, you'll regret it and just end up spending more money when it gets the best of you. I know from experience.

 

For someone who went from 265, 255 and then to 285 all within a year. If you want a 33” and worried about mpg 18-20mpg but want very good offroad and on road performance and don’t care for that wide tire look 255 is what you want.

265 is for those who don’t want a cmc and other headaches and get 20+MPG.

285 what I currently have 285 toyo RTs. They do look good on my te37s though and my mpg took a big hit around the city. Donthey do better offroad many people say they do....but meh....as far as I know 255 will go anywhere 285 go.

I will always suggest 255 is a damn good tire choice!

 

Do you have wheel spacers? The TRD wheels are 0 offset correct and no rubbing on the UCA's? That truck looks sweet.

265’s don’t look terrible... but I just bought 285 AT3W’s anyway. They actually weigh the same as the 265 Toyo MT’s in this picture lol. (2.5”/2.0” lift)

I’ll let you know how it goes after install this week, might be able to do a little wheeling this weekend. I’m sure it won’t rub on the street at all

 

True. I have 255s, and to be honest sometimes I get worse gas mileage than my buddy who has 285s. It’s truly not much of a difference in mpg.

 

I recently went and picked up some 285 Falken Wildpeak AT3w’s. At the time I only had a 2 inch lift in the front, stock rear. I was skeptical but once I threw them on I barely had any trimming to do on the inner fender liner. I’ve done some pretty decent obstacles and I have no rubbing whatsoever. I don’t event have a cmc!

I agree with the truck looking a bit off when lifted with stock tires. That why I went up to 285. I have no issues with the way it drives or handles on the road. I dd 50miles each way. The mpg def took a hit looking at 15.5 -18 Mostly in 17’s. I might try to go to 275 next go round

 

Yeah that 0.60" gap fill under the fender and 0.80" wider, really just bulging in down there. Hahaha






OP do whatever your gut says. You won't go wrong then. 265/75r16 does just fine on trails if that's what you're worried about. Buy skids and sliders and its no longer an issue.

I'm currently running 265/70/17 c Ko2's and really like them.
The problem is I often park next to a guy at work running 285's with the same wheels and get tire envy every time I look at his truck

One thing I regret is not getting 285’s from the start. currently on 265’s but will be upgrading in 10-15k miles.

 

285s here. Going 35s when they wear out.

 

On a stock TRD Pro & 16" Pro wheels, do you need a spacer to clear the upper control arm on 285? I've heard you need a 5mm, some say you don't. Some say slight trimming, some say cab mount chop if you're off-roading? Is the rub destructive, or just more of an annoyance since it'll rub for a split second on a specific cambered turn with a specific mount of wheel turn?

 

How much lift did you add? You were able to keep the front mud flaps?
