Up ~10% on my DIS and down ~30% on UAL. Knew I should've waited on that one...
Gonna throw some more money at UAL, it seems.

Most, if not all in this thread carry little unsecured debt.

Good post, but a little windy.

I wonder how many are truly debt free. Are we counting a mortgage as debt or do we let it slide since it's "secured" debt?

    Food for thought:

Since vehicles have a finite lifetime and lose value continuously, I decided a while back to always have a car payment - even when paid off. Evens out the cashflow over the long term.

I don't. And I don't count it against people. As long as you can swing a mortgage payment in the worst times........but what the hell do I know I consider a loan for a car a sin.

Yeah I mean, I'm "debt free", truck and mortgage payment. Truck is a smidge over 5 I'm paying that off fast, but my mortgage is at 4.25 and could go lower if I re-fi. 4.25, I'd prefer to have my money in the market than pay that off rapidly.

Whatever your auto payment is, once it's paid off take 50%-75% of it and sock it away every month still anyway. Then when time comes to buy a new car you can walk in like a high roller and pay cash.

Rental isn't for everyone. We had tennants from hell when my dad passed and had to go through every hoop to evict them (they were even family friends, too....well...."friends", and were). I am happy to say NO to that income stream.

Debt in and of itself isn't a bad thing. Depends on how deeply you're leveraged vs. your ability to pay and survive downturns.

@Pablo8 - A car loan isn't necessarily a bad thing either - depends on your alternative. The credit union note I took out in Sept '16 for my Taco was 1.3% APR. Would've cost me more to pay cash.

Sure. If you pay 1.3% on 50K then use that 50K in the market to return 5% you're ahead. Thing is, most people don't. They leverage and live check to check. That's what I mean when I say debt.

I just took out a mortgage, 30 year fixed rate of 2.99%, $0 down (no PMI). I love debt when they offer conditions like that. If you use debt intelligently (to your advantage), there's nothing wrong with it.

I have a mortgage and a truck payment. I’ve used the same truck for years and years. It’s a 2002 and I still have it lol!
I just recently bought a new truck because I got tired of working on the old. It was time to step up.

I always pay extra on the principal and amount borrowed. In 6 months just by paying an extra $500 on the mortgage I make 2 years worth of payments.
I pay an extra $200 on the truck. I’d rather buckle down now and enjoy life more later.

Yup. It's all about financial literacy and possessing the discipline to live within your means.

Which is not something most folks out in the real world seem to be able to manage.

Also have to consider length of the loan too. Realistically a 3-5 year car loan isn't a "long term" investment range.

    VA loan.

That was my point. I wasn't bragging about my loan haha, just saying that some debt can be beneficial, some should probably be avoided (especially credit card interest).

I'm not debt free. I have some CC debt leftover from a younger, stupider version of myself.
I am able to pay all of my bills each month, overpay on the CC, and put a fair amount into my 401(k) so I think I'm alright to play around with the small amount I have invested.

I'd wager most everyone here had younger/stupider versions of themselves. I know I did.

Sounds like you're on track. Congrats.
