The reason it starts to smoke on an incline is likely twofold - insufficient cylinder head oil drainage causes it to pool at the back of the head. Poor baffling of the PCV allows it to ingest this liquid oil into the intake, where it proceeds to the cylinders. One wonders if the pooled oil would also allow it to leak into the cylinders via the valve seals.

Either way, If you’re lucky, it burns off, causing some damage to your catalysts and maybe fouling your spark plugs. If you’re unlucky, that oil hydrolocks the engine. Burning oil inside the cylinder would only minimally aid lubrication of the piston on the cylinder walls, and once it gets sucked into the PCV it’s never going back to the crankcase anyway. The real concern would be lack of oil in the oil pan, causing low oil pressure. I’ve not seen that as of yet. When i cliff dove in my truck, at this severe side angle the low oil level light was on, but when running the low oil pressure light did not illuminate. The oil it was sucking into the cylinders caused the idle to get very erratic. No discernible loss on the dipstick when i picked the truck up from the body shop months later. It has developed a cold engine tick however.
As you can see in the video a few posts above, it really doesn’t catch enough oil to run it dry.

Seems like a valid explanation for the white smoke exhaust, but how was that causing the noise heard in the original problem video?

I'm gonna try it. Just got my catch can in and I'll get it on this week. My truck quit while trying to climb a pretty steep slick rock hill on a trail. I had to back down without power and it sucked.

I read through this whole thread. Whew! I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.

Has anyone who had the smoking confirm that the JLT oil separator "solves" this issue?

If it helps it would only delay the problem as when the separator fills it will just continue forward into the intake. I guess the volume is substantial enough to give you significant time? More time, at least?

Anyone who uses this do you empty the can after each outing where your climbing? How full is it?

If the motor is burning enough oil to "hydrolock" the motor, that is a significant amount of oil!

if that much oil is in the cylinders to ‘ hydrolock ‘ the engine

it would NOT be white smoke
