You'll never get that sub behind the back seat.

You are limited to shallow mount subs.

You aren’t limited to shallow mount subs per se but you are limited for mounting depth. Under 5” shouldn’t be too hard but it depends on the magnet radius. That’s why neo magnets aren’t a bad option like the SD4 subs.

If you build a custom box you can try to push your luck but you really have to watch the rear seat clearance for high excursion drivers, even if you do manage to stuff one back there that has a longer mounting depth.

I think my subs are just under 5” mounting depth and my sub box is about 7” at the very bottom, but because of the angle of the box face they barely fit. They are really squeezed in there with just enough clearance for excursion, but I did not have to remove the plastic on the rear seats. I did use some washers to space them forward though.

You can use thinner MDF to allow for a little more space but thin boxes sound shitty IMO.

Does that include the inch you need behind the pole vent?

I am guessing not. I asked them directly because this is a new model of the older HippoXl84...they said the R model has bigger motor and xmax was the difference hence while it is rated at 200rms more. They said 5.4 but i didnt ask about the extra inch...

Sure is a beastly lookin' sub. Fit though - that looks tough. I'd probably want a least a 1 inch plywood baffle for it - then there's the rear. Go big or go home though 'eh? :D I like the way you think. I ripped out the rear wall of my x-cab to fit a sub...no regrets

I have an Image Dynamics IDQ-10" behind my seat in a 1 cu ft box if you don't want to go with a shallow mount. You can't go with a bigger sub though.

This summer i'm going to be doing something similar to what you're suggesting. I'm going to be going for a quad memphis mojo 8s (900w rms each) build running on a skar rp4500 sealed. These subs have a mounting depth of 5.75 so i'm probably going to have to space the seats a little bit forwards and rip out the seat back plastics to make sure I have room for excursion.

I kinda got my idea for this build from here: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/sundown-audio-sa-8.419774/#post-12001139
His 8s have a 6 5/8 depth so i'm sure i'll be able to get away without having to fiberglass the back wall like he did.
