I’m a little over halfway through the agonizing break in process for my 4.56 gears. Loving how the truck drives!

Looks so good dude. Nicely done!

 

Gear break in is now complete. Changed out the gear oil this morning. Now it’s time to enjoy these 4.56’s. I’ll report back after I get some non-break in miles on them.

Any of you guys running 35's on stock gears?

 

I ran 34s and 35s on 3.90s for a long time. It sucked haha

 

Not for long lol. Just ordered 4:88 today.

 

See thats the thing for me, even if you lift, and have the balls to CMC, you still need to drop 2k on regearing to run 35's

 

You don't have to.

I drove my truck across the Rockies to wheel and camp on 3.90s. I also made most of that in 3rd gear because 4th and 5th were out of the question. Wheeling with stock gears required a lot more slipping of the clutch and in some situations it was especially shitty. For a toy it was alright, but I've loved having 5.29s

I guess my question would be why do you want to run 35’s to begin with. Like others have said you don’t “have to” re gear but your engine and transmission will suffer in the long run.

 

I ran 35s on stock gears for 20k miles. I'm a second gen so your experience might be different but 2nd gens are 3.73 and 3rd gens are 3.91s. it wasn't terrible but gas mileage sucks. Anything above 70 was 10-12mpg and 55-65 was 15mpg. 5th gear was almost useless here in the Colorado mountains. Any small hill you come up to it downshifts.

That being said, I didn't have my truck long on stock tires and since I've upgraded to 37s and 5.29s I'm not super happy with it. The truck is still gutless and feels underpowered. But that's to be expected when you modify these trucks. I'll either motorswap it or get a supercharger one day.

 

Did you also have full armor when you ran 35s with stock gears?

 

No. Stock skids. Winch and winchplate upfront and high clearance and rtt. I weighed the truck at 5800lbs at one of the scales off the highway without me in it.

 

I havent weighed my truck yet, but I have 5.29s, rtt, steel skids and a steel demello with 10k winch. I honestly think my truck has alot more go in the butt dyno than it did before. I think that has to do with the fact my wheels are lighter than stock trd wheels. Thats the main reason I went with the f5s was to reduce unsprung weight

 

Ahh thanks for sharing your experiences guys. The highways here in New Mexico have lots of steep hills with a speed limit of 75 so everyone is going 80. I think I’d have to regear to run 35’s and I dont think I’ll have the money drop on a regear anytime soon.

265’s have been fine for my needs but 35’s look sick

 

The moment I went 35s I wanted 40s.

 

Happy medium and get 33’s while you save up for re gear. In the mean time watch the bst and find some schmuck that is parting out there truck and already has gears.
