Anyone recommend an affordable, quality handgun training school? I'm not new to guns, but I started Action Pistol shooting last summer and I want to fine tune things. Maybe something in the Las Vegas area or Arizona?

Thunder Ranch and Front Sight seem a bit much money-wise. I'm looking for something for 2 or 4 days where I can snag a cheap flight and make a little vacation out of it.

Being former military full time swat. I’ve taken many shooting schools and classes around the country.. if you want a good instructor you will pay..former SOF and Tier 1 guys are always great... then there is the ammo, many have high round counts.. be prepared for that..vacations wise, I go there to train and learn. During these classes you are long days and you are beat at the end of the day. So plan a few days before or after the class.

    these guys travel.

I really like John McPhee, Sheriff Of Baghdad.. he is former tier 1 operator. he has all levels of classes.

Frank proctor, Way of the Gun, is great. Former Green Beret.. more competition oriented, shoot fast and accurate.

Dan Brokos at Lead Faucet.. not sure if he does civilian training.

Pat Macnamera, tmacs, is great.. former delta guy.

Northern Red are all former Tier 1 instructors.. they have civilian classes LE/Mil classes.. great instruction.

All classes are gonna run, $400-$800 but the knowledge they hand down is worth it.

    good luck.

Thanks. I'll look into your recommendations. By "vacation" I just meant going somewhere warm away from Minnesota for a few days. I wouldn't be going to screw around.

Like I said, I can handle a handgun and I have a whole lot of hand loads stockpiled (bonus of having cold winters in MN - get to load ammo in the basement a lot). I've just found that no matter how much I practice, I'm always in the top half of competitors but never in the top 3. I'm just looking for an edge.

    Sorry, I just saw this!
These guys are down here in Missouri, just an hour south of St. Louis. Looks like an easy drive for you.
I took the basics of tactical shooting course, and I thought it was very good. In fact, it's been a few years and I have a rifle addiction, so intend to retake maybe next year to stay semi-sharp.

You say you started " Action Pistol " . USPSA or IDPA ? Tactical training classes and Action Pistol classes are very different. Seek out classes from GM's for your Action Pistol needs. Search the various different Tactical Instructors for that stuff.

I agree with the above. You need to focus your attention toward USPSA or IDPA which ever discipline you're trying to break into the top 3 and some of those top tier guys aren't gonna get you there. If you're looking to maximize your training you need to look at guys that focus at that discipline. For example, I have a good buddy who is a Grand Master that shot for Wilson Combat and his analytical approach to dry fire taught me more than any of the tactical guys that I or my department spent money on. So much so that I was easily in the top 5 when I would compete in local matches consistently. If your goal is kicking doors, look at those who do that, but if you're looking at stage planning and how to shoot through ports more efficiently pick a GM's brain ask them questions. I've found that most of them are very helpful. Good luck.

PS - breaking down specific steps. Like reloads dry for 15 minutes a night or moving from position to position will pay dividends. Especially if you can record them and watch Master Class/GM's and see where you can save time and what they are doing differently.
