Talk me out of (or into) 315's...

Two potential setups:

Toyo MT or ST Maxx 285/75/17 (very similar weight).
17" T4R TRD wheels

OR

Cooper STT Pro 315/75/16 <<<< This setup is actually lighter than the above.
SCS F5 16x8



Yes, im aware of the cutting and regearing my 2.7 will need for both setups. I'd simply asking for opinions in terms of any pros/cons between the two setups I havent possibly thought of. The biggest that comes to mind is wheel bearings and steering - obviously a higher offset with strain both of those hence why im drawn to the 17" T4R wheels. I don't do any crazy offroading, and its also my DD. Keep in mind I know what i'll need to do with my alignment/caster/LCA cams, etc in order to make it work along with the cutting - cmc already done a while back when i had 285/75/16 on stock suspension before gears. I feel like this is a toss up considering the total unsprung weight is almost the same, so asking for opinions.

I say go for it from a fellow 2.7 owner. It's stupid but let's see what happens! Go with the SCS f5 in 16x8. They are the lightest wheels out there and don't let the offset scare you. IMO the wheel bearing and steering argument is a bit of a hyperbole. Will it decrease life? Yes. But probably not to where you'll notice the difference. Plus wheel bearing hubs are incredibly easy to swap if they are pre assembled.

I'll throw the Milestar Patagonia 315/75r16 into your list of options. Slightly lighter than your Cooper STT Pro option.

 

I have F5s down in my garage waiting to go on a tire of my choosing and 17" T4R as well.

If you've already cut some and plan to re-gear anyways, I say go 315. Those are the 2 things that have kept me from going bigger. I run 255/85-16 Toyo MT on my current truck and had them on my 2013 4x4 RC AT and love them but would go 35" if I was willing to cut things and pay for re-gearing on a brand new truck, but I'm not. I recommend Toyo MT's all day long. Relatively quite and durable as hell. Worth the price and weight for sure.

 

I've also considered the 255 Toyo, but this truck is so damn heavy anything more than 245/265 and its unbearable - it NEEDS more gear. So i figured if im going to regear anyways, may as well go big ya know?

 

Sounds like you’ve considered everything. Now it’s time to put your credit card in for the order.

 

the only thing I will say is do the gearing first. I would easily rather drive around overgeared for a few weeks than be undergeared. Especially right now with the whole covid mess there are a few diff shops that are taking a bit longer on turnaround time because of precautions they are taking. I would go ahead and get the regear done and then slap on the wheels and tires. Let us know how it goes!

 

Those Patagonia are awesome! They also have a “34” tire that measure to like 33.7 I think and it’s a 12” wide which is always an option too

 

the hardest part lol, hence why I’m asking final opinions before I drop that $$$

Haha need to beef up the rear after adding the topper and rtt for sure. I have quite a bit of reverse rake when loaded up.

How many miles on it now? DD?

curious if you’ve had an issue in the front at all with the offset and 315s - that’s my only concern. She’s a slow pig no matter what tire size with 2.7 lol (for my rig).

 

Ive got ~72 K on the truck and ~15 K on 35s. I was on 33s before that for ~40 K miles. No issues with front end or suspension. Had to trim some at the back of the wheel wells, do a cab mount relocation, get an alignment, and regear to 5.29s but other than that it was pretty painless.
