It has weather channels. I really like the unit, and combined with a on/off switch I have in the dash and the rj45 plug in the dash, I can turn it off and remove the hand held when Its not in use.

I know, I love the uniden that I have, but really am thinking of getting a new one just to get a PA... though I could always just buy a PA unit and call it good.

Is the rj45 an option that you bought for that unit or is it a universal setup?
.....day chance to post a pic of it?

So this is the first version that I got, it was a 3d printed one that just holds a keystone jack. It worked ok, but was of questionable quality.

The second one I got was injection molded for just a rj45 and had it already installed. I dont have a picture right now, but i think this is where I got it.

    Cool, thanks!
...i just rolled back a page and saw that pic so apologize for being lazy!

I guess that handheld connects to the base different than the cobra I have.

It uses a computer network jack, many radios use them now since its a easy standard to keep. But some radios are still using the barrel jacks :(

Definitely a cleaner setup that way and quick to disconnect it. Do they last as long as the barrel type? seems that connection was always the weak point on a phone.

The plug female part lasts, but it also has replaceable insides. As for the male part of the jack, the lock clip can break pretty easy, but with any rj45 crimper you can replace the jack. I had to replace one last winter because the glue inside let loose and lost connection. Uniden sent me a new one under warranty, and I just crimped a new jack to the old one.

Sorry to reboot this. Doesn't the USB from the unit power the handset? How did you wire this up to make that work?

No the USB is just an extra outlet so you can power something else of your choice. Handset gets power through the CAT plug.

Updated my original post to reflect Midland actually upgrading the MXT-275 to allow split tones. They also replaced the old USB-A port with a USB-C fast charging port! :headbang:

Nice. Is that still the GMRS radio to get? I love that the base can be remoted and all the controls/display is on the mic.

If you are sticking with GMRS and don't plan to get into commercial-grade radio programming or ham radio (VHF/UHF), the MXT-275 is the best all-around mobile GMRS radio at the moment. Other models can reach the 50-Watt limit, but that becomes moot if you mount a good Laird/Larsen/Comet antenna center-tuned to 465MHz on the roof. It's also really hard to beat the mic controls and the tiny, solid transceiver.
