    Hi,

I was able to find some relevant info by searching, but nothing an exact match or within the past couple years. I just picked up my new truck in Super White. Upon detailing the truck today I noticed small debris under the paint in about a dozen locations. I looked over the truck when I purchased it and did notice a couple and showed the sales manager who took note of it.

Is this common? More obvious because the paint is single stage? For those who let the dealer fix this what steps were taken and are you happy with the results?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Rail dust. A clay bar or IronX will take care of it. Search for rail dust or IronX in the detailing forum for more info

Toyota has a spec for trash in the paint, its amazingly liberal too... I found tons of spots on my truck, I found a few dry spots where the clear was sprayed very thin and looked like sand paper.

Toyota said its within spec. So, I fixed it myself with some polishing. The trash in the paint I just have to live with.

It’s not rail dust, I already tried clay on it and it’s under the paint, not embedded.

I’m no stranger to some minor paint correction. I worked on my Corvette (took hours lol) and it came out great. From feel I believe Super White is single stage and no clear coat but I can’t tell for sure unless I attack it with my DA and some product. Today I just used clay, glaze and sealant I figured when the weather is a little better I’ll go at it more. I do have all the equipment already.59453450-DDEA-4D1F-8929-800BF0572D4D.jpg

I’m not afraid to dig into this but my truck only has 140 miles, not sure why the dealer can’t take the proper action on it. So it sounds like my situation isn’t an outlier.

Bummer. Maybe off-road it a bit and add some of your own blemishes? That’s what I would do.

Why would you think the dealer would eat this cost. Paint defect correction should be on Toyota’s dime not the dealer. Sure, they might be in the middle of it. Curious, not trying to stir any pots here but do you work for a dealership?

You may very well be right. The sales manager did verify them and took pictures the night I bought the truck but then it becomes my word against his I suppose. I’ll review the warranty information more closely. My main interest and purpose of the post was to see if this is common for Toyota Tacoma or if my truck is an outlier. My ‘14 Prius had Blizzard Pearl paint and there’s tons of complaints on it but mine was perfect and durable with no defects I ever found.

Not a small town I live in the greater Seattle area.

Hey @20thumper I have a similar issue with my 2020 4runner, I’d be very persistent with the dealer. While I was prepping my vehicle for ceramic coating I had multiple pieces of paint flake off to the metal. Currently dealing with the dealer to get this issue corrected.

I also had this issue with my MGM Tacoma, dealer had to redo the panel because of the imperfections.

    just be persistent.

Our Taco has a spec like your middle pic of the 3 you posted. Our detailer pointed it out to us. If i knew saw it during the walk around I wouldn't have taken it off the dealership lot.

my son bought a tundra years ago and I noticed a chip on the roof he took the truck back and the dealer wouldn't concede to fix it saying it could have been damaged after leaving the lot

    both these trucks are white

no, like the paints completely gone and the only thing there is the sheet metal lol. I’ve also noticed another part of my hood is about to start flaking as well in the corner.

Yikes. What color is your 4Runner? I’m from the Bay Area originally also, San Jose. How did they flake off were they defects like mine? Do you have pictures?

Since I did see it before I left I probably should have refused delivery. I had traded in my Prius and I was over 45 min from home so I didn’t have a ton of options. Not sure how that would even work. I emailed the sales manager but he’s been bugging me for the charging cable for my Prius Plug In that I traded (I know it was in the car) so he’s probably not wanting to help much, or making up the missing charger story as an excuse to deny help. I’ll see, but I can be a real pain in the ass with corporate if necessary.

I had a 2018 DCSB OR super white and it had multiple spots where there was debris below the paint. The Tacoma paint also stained very easily from tire shine, pollen spots, etc... The truck had 2 coats of Collinite 845 on it that was always followed up by a detail spray. Never seemed to matter how much wax was on it as it stained a lot, but would fade after some time. I traded it in on a 2018 4runner, also super white, and never had any of these issues. I have not seen any debris under the paint of the 4runner, but I have a spot or two that is a brown/orange that it had from day one. Never spotted it before buying it.

The paint from Japan definitely seems a lot nicer than the Tacoma paint from the US.

Curious, was your truck built in Texas or Mexico?
