Plastidip wheels?

That’s what I got for my t4r or trail wheels… still need to do it though. Wasn’t going to but think I might get the glossifier just in case I change my mind last min

I plastic dipped the wheels on my 4Runner and they held up for 4 years before I needed to redo them, I just did a set of FJ I had, they will be going on my Taco, did it in a 2 tone, copper and black since I have nothing better to do. I was planning on getting new wheels and tires but hard to do with then current situation. And I really like those FJ wheels

 

How was taping off for the 2tone? Clean lines or no

 

It has a simple design and I have a lot of free time so it wasn’t bad. Lines are pretty clean. the wheels were already plastic-dipped which also helped with the clean lines of it. I put on the copper first waited a day, then taped and blacked out the outside. The rear is how I had then before

 

I have the t4r or trail wheels with the black so that will make it easier for me. Planned on doing the outer machined lip in a gloss black to match the factory black and the spokes a bronze… so it will look somewhat similar in the 2tone

that's a great color. make sure you use skinny tape on the edge a few times, so you can get clean lines

 

I’ve never dipped before let alone a detailed tape off. I bought some of the green narrow tape. What do you mean on the edge a few times? Just multiple layers on top of each other to build it up basically

Thinking about dipping my OR wheels, but have a few questions. Fonzi's videos show him spraying while the wheels are on and he also sprays the lugs. I see some of you tape them off and others don't. Wouldn't it peel if you rotated your tires? I could just get black lugs and solve this problem, but I'm cheap. Also, if you remove the plastic cap before spraying, wouldn't it peel when you snap it back into place?

These are the reasons I'm leaning towards vinyl.

 

I removed the tires from the Taco when I plasti dipped mine. 3 harsh winters and they still look the same. Didn't do the nuts, as I'm sure they would peel when you loosen the nuts. Nice thing about P.D. is you can always spray over an area and it doesn't show.

 

Good point, but then I'm still stuck with chrome lugs.

 

Buy new lugs they are cheap. I’ve seen a few guys post from Amazon and they came with locking lugs and they were very reasonable. This is my plan once it gets warmer and dry for a solid week.

 

Never bothered me, but I'm sure they'd look better black.

 

I was just really careful to tape and peel the lugs carefully, turned out great for a first go.

Taped my lugs and left them silver.

 

I plastic dipped my FJ wheels Black & Bronze (I needed to get Mag Lug <$56 for 40 lugs>instead of the acorn) I ordered them black, cuz my tacoma is black, when I had them on my 4Runner (silver) I kept the lugs silver. but they where black and gunmetal. it all about preference.
I like doing them off the truck, i can get all the angles better

 

You really don't have to tape off the tires. The dip will just peel right off the rubber.
