Is 3.0 overkill for a Tacoma due to it being a midsize and weighing less than a full size?

Would you still never use the 3.0s full potential even with steel bumpers, skids, roof top tent, etc.? That's a lot of added weight

You can't drive fast enough to get any use out of them. 3.0 shocks on Tacomas are just bling, if anyone tells you other wise they don't have any clue what they are talking about. If Rogue offroad is telling you other wise they are a bunch of fuck stains who take advantage of people who don't know any better.

If anyone can show me proof of someone that has cooked a rear 2.5 with stock front arms ill eat my words.

Generally speaking, you're probably right. That said, is there really any downside (other than cost) to 3.0s being overkill? It seems the King 3.0s come with a lower shock mounting bracket extending it a bit which I'd guess gives you some more travel (speculating so correct me if I'm wrong). Wouldn't this be the most robust and capable suspension setup available without making significant modifications to the vehicle (swapping UCA's is not hard and definitely not irreversible) such as a rear shock relocation kit or going LT?

damn that was an old post. I'm going to correct my original statement though. I don't like using vague wording like "any Tacoma." If you've got a well built LT Tacoma, likely fully caged, etc then I could justify using a 3.0" shock. I think this topic was specific for OE fitment but I still wanted to elaborate.

Travel isn't designated by the shock. Realistically, you should be finding a shock that fits the travel not the other way around.

Downside is later realizing that either:
    1) the owner gets bored with messing around with his truck and moves back to a Subaru and learns that those shocks aren't worth what he paid for and will be next to impossible to get the money back out of them when he parts out or sells the truck
    2) the shocks are pointless and then spend more money later on to get a suspension that actually perform markedly better than stock.
