I currently have 4.56 gears in my 02 2.7l prerunner. I’m running 33’s and could possibly be going even bigger in the future, so I was wanting to regear to 4.88’s. My question is, how much would it cost if I got it done at a shop? Or is it something I could do myself? Any feedback or advice is appreciated!

I did mine myself. If you’re mechanically inclined and have the proper tools and A Lot of patience you can do it. I watched lots of YouTube videos on read a lot of online. The parts are not that expensive. The tools really isn’t either. But it very time consuming doing it the first time. At least you have a pre runner and won’t have to deal with the front which is worse than the rear. I have a company vehicle for work so my truck was down probably a month or so. About a year after I did it I put an air locker in the rear so pretty much went through the process again. Much easier the second time. It was a HUGE amount of satisfaction knowing I did it myself.

A shop here wanted around $3500 for the front and rear including parts. Most of that labor. I can certainly understand why they charge so much labor. I also have 4:56 with 2.7, 5 spd and 285/74 KM3s. Probably recommend 4:88 if you’re gonna 35s. Especially if it’s an auto.
