That was straight out of the Toyota press release in 2016.

Then again they’re known to make mistakes in those like saying that the front brake rotors are 10 inches diameter.

The 4 doesn’t work “so hard” opposed to the 6 that it has a shorter life expectancy. I have a 250k+ 3rz I4 that runs like a top. Still. Even after beating on it for almost 2 decades.

don’t bother brother. Some people just don’t get regearing when jumping to bigger tires lol. Hence his comment making it sound like the 2.7 can only handle 245 stockers...

Shit. I didn’t regear, and this truck could still get me a felony speeding stop. Uphill lol. I don’t give a shit how fast someone wants to go...this is fundamentally the wrong platform (a Toyota pickup) So if a poster’s end all be all is speed, they are relegated to idiot status, right off the bat.

“work it hard” means to me , towing, carrying heavy loads and driving at higher speeds. Any or all qualifies.

I’ve had six of these puppies, three four cylinders and three sixes.
One four cylinder was headed for an early grave towing a pontoon boat. I think I bruised my right foot more then a few times pushing in the accelerator while watching it overheat . The two 4.0 sixes Took towing and cruising on the interstate in stride with ease. I felt so much safer with the adequate power.

Off roading and pizza delivery and loaning it out to my kids ? I’ll take the four any day.

Go V6. It will save you from saying "Wish I got a V6" down the road.
But seriously, a lot of good input out there but, don't forget about V6 vs. 4cyl when it comes time to trade. V6 will definitely keep the value up there.

When I bought mt 18 I went to the dealer thinking the 4 Cyl. Test drove one and I was really shocked with the acceleration (or lack of). Bought the 6 and never looked back.

You’re really throwing me off with this pizza delivery thing. You have me with off roading.

I crave my 2.7L, and I'm not a senior citizen. But I do like pizza, so there's that...

Test drive both is the short answer.

Test drive both, and get real- understand what the Tacoma IS and ISNT, and purchase what you actually want, accordingly...is the medium answer.

I think OP is just sitting back watching the feeding frenzy at this point.

I test drove a V6 and I4. The V6's performance didn't thrill me enough to want to pay for the price and content difference.

But I am, as I said in my first post, a patient driver with nothing to prove. The ECT Button helps me when I wanna get up and go, but if someone wants to go faster then I simply let them.

i was fine with my 4cyl for 130k miles. it went plenty "fast" and it hauled whatever i threw in the bed just fine. i found it too lacking in power. i'd still have it if i could have realistically fit a car seat in the backseat of an access cab. but still, test drive it long enough to set cruise control for a period of time to understand those downshifts, and engine noise at 70+. i was perfectly happy with my truck.

Really, in the end, they are both good engines. The 4 cyl definitely is tried and true for sure. My father had a 97 1st gen regular cab 4 cyl and I definitely beat the bag out of that thing and it kept going like it came off the factory floor. The truck had a frame recall and he ended up with 2010 SR5 6 cyl. Toyota's engines never really been too much of issue compared to a lot of the other companies out there. A little under powered? Sure. Reliable? Definitely.

I live in south california, but I do go to placed that have some steep hills every once in a while, but still at see level. I do think that I'm somewhat of a inpatient driver since right now I ride a sport motorcycle as my commuter and it has spoiled me with the low end torque and the high speed. As per the cabin I am pretty set on double.

I have heard about the 4 cyl being bullet proof, are there any known problems with the v6? oil consumption, leaks any mayor thing I should know about?
