Found along a RR I presume? That's the only place I have found mine although I suppose they could be found elsewhere. Have you researched the letters yet?

On the ones I posted above you can see most are "S.P.CO" which stands for southern Pacific company who bought the CPRR I dont know what railroad the other two are from havent spent time researching them

Disregard, I'm an idiot and clearly having brain delays after a few beers. I see you did some research.... those are awesome relics!

Yes, along a rail line. I also found (surface) an iron band with S.P.CO embossed into it. Southern Pacific! The letters C&CR fit, as the rail line is the Carson & Colorado.

Did you take Iron band home or have pics? Would be interested to see it if so. Any idea what it was?

It has a hole on one end to perhaps attach to something. The other end has "1 1 1" and is torn at the third 1. There was a bit of this material laying around, so there may be more of them.

I THINK those are bale seals too... just a later version, I have ran across them before. They are all steel and have a different "seal" part that kind of looks like a tiny barrel.

Also I don't mean to come off like a know it all... I really just started detecting a few years ago and am learning more all the time. Im 29 and happened to meet a kid that is actually younger than me along a railroad one day that has taught me most of what I know... His dad has been detecting for decades, and his Grandpa as well! ! 3rd generation metal detectorist  LOL

It makes sense that it would/could be used as a seal.

No worries! We're all just in here sharing info! That's how we learn. Before today, I had no idea that RR companies would "seal" cargo and train cars. Makes sense.
Problem is, now I gotta go back and see if I can find more of them..... ;)

Those old seals are cool pieces of history for sure. Often found in close proximity the the RR locks too

Also look within throwing distance of the tracks, those riding the trains often chucked their bottles out the window after they downed their ale. Found some nice unbroken old ones that way too.

I've heard that also. I guess the pumpkin seed flasks were a common bottle to get tossed.

I found a dime and a penny under the self check out at Walmart this morning. Had to use my pocket knife to get the dime as it was up under the cart bumper further than my fingers could reach.

Home Depot self checkouts have (had) machines that returned bill change in a slot low on the machine, which made it hard to see any money there. I often found $1’s and $5’s in them... didn’t keep them though. Once, when I was doing an away from home overnight job and stupidly forgot my wallet, I found a $20 that fed me for the rest of the time I was out. I was rather grateful, but felt bad to have kept it- so I donated an extra $40 for it to our local food pantry when I got home.

Finding stuff is always a fun and interesting part of the day, in whatever form it takes! As long as it’s good stuff and not like finding your neighbors’ dog went on your yard or something worse!;)

Found this on my hike last week: just used my eyes and saw something that didn't look 'right'. Not metal but...

It’s from a flake, and the edges look secondarily modified with pressure flaking to turn it into a small cutting tool.

    No Gold Today. Rain Delay.

My partner and I diverted to Keeler to check on some coin prospects and didn't find what we were looking for. We did see some friends though, and had a good laugh!
We then headed to Darwin to check our coin prospects down that way. We stopped at a friend's place and he gave us a bit of a tour. We then detected his back yard and my buddy found a 1941 and 1942 (War) nickels. He also found a 1981 cent, for a grand total of 11 cents. We got plenty of good signals but didn't really pull many coins. We will return...

Darwin was founded in 1874, so we know that there is old stuff to be found. We have access to a few lots and aim to determine where property lines end and public land begins.
The town is really funky, and has a unique vibe. This place makes me feel like if I wander into the wrong yard, I'm gonna get shot!
I have included a YouTube documentary which I find very, umm, interesting...

    DarwinStation.jpg

The Chinese were not allowed to live in town, so they dug caves on the outskirts and lived there.

Ever see a piano in a cave??
