    Does it drive differently when that happened? A Bmw 550 I had would say that then go into limp mode. Went from 8 cylinders to 4. Sucked when I was going 80 on the freeway. Dealer could never figure it out. Ended getting a lemon attorney and having BMW buy it back after 2 years of ownership. Could be something simple like people mentioned before. Check the oil just in case. Check the connectors near the throttle body or the mass air sensor on the air intake hose.
