If you can't find someone with an affordable winch, people have tested the harbor freight ones and have had some pretty good results with them if that's a route you're willing to take or prefer new.

Yeah, jumbled wires that are all the same color is a special kind of hell.

In the industry I'm in they label both ends, and there is federally required set of up to date plans located nearby. Makes life easier.

Harbor Freight is a lifesaver. Idk if we would end up with a winch from there, but I don't really have any reason to be cautious. Especially since they're really good about their warranties.

Learning about currents in hs physics was the only part of the class I really excelled at. I had a lot of fun making different circuits. Since getting a job at a stained glass studio I have a fancy soldering iron and the works now too :D

I’ve been all over the country, mostly solo. You just gotta be smart

garmin inreach, maxtrax, shovel, tire repair kit, tool kit, air down tools and compressor are all you really need. Everything else is fluff and weight and money out the window for 90% of people.

Oh sweet. Stained glass is super cool. Is it just a regular soldering iron or is it something special for glass?

We had one about the size of one of those giant novelty pencils in a lab I worked at...came in handy.

I always get in the dumbest pickles when I get distracted or don't things through.

That's when all the other stuff comes in handy.

yeah we don't uh, we don't have any of that stuff. We've never gotten stuck, but I'm not taking my chances when crawling like that.

I use a Hakko, I'm pretty sure they're geared towards people who do stained glass, but you can solder anything with them. They're just notably hardy and have an adjustable temp that maxes out at 540 Celsius. Adjustable temps are super important so if you decide to work with different solders you're not getting bad flow. Doing stained glass is basically like welding; if it's not super smooth, the piece is worth nothing. Get it too hot and you can crack the glass really easy.

That sounds pretty similar to electrical soldering, down to watching how it flows and not overheating things. We even used hakkos at a previous job.

Looks like the weller I have here tops out at 450C though. Interesting. I bet the solder chemistry is different.

Wellers are usually second in line as far as doing stained glass goes. Instead of using like rosin core etc, typically you use 60/40 or 50/50 tin-lead ratio and use flux to adhere it to copper if you're using the Tiffany method, which is fairly standard on smaller pieces, lamps or commissions for normal sized windows. Lead free I believe has a higher melting point, but it's super expensive so I've never worked with it.

Makes sense. The electrical solder I have is 63 Sn/37 Pb, rosin core. Lead free is a whole thing for us, or at least it was, took a long time to get the mix right so it wouldn't crack. It's still not as good as leaded, imo.

I'm used to working on things much much smaller.

    More voltage = More fun*

    * Watch out for AC. Watch out for DC. High voltage capacitors are scary. High current is scary.
