    Hey guys

We have all this cheap gasoline just wondering what gasoline you guys are running in your 2nd Gens ?
Any one running fuel treatments ?
I run the cheapest Sams club or Costco but add a Lucus oil lubricant , figure any extra lube can’t hurt with modern fuel injection and gasoline being crap with blended ethanol .
Are the 2nd gens known for fuel pump issues ?

    Lucas oil lubricant?

I run 87 octane from a reputable brand thats local around New England. But if thats not available Im not too worried about it.

Ill probably add some stabil next time I fill up just because Im not driving much lately with all this virus BS. But thats about it.

They don’t necessarily have “fuel pump” issues so much as “fuel pump sock” issues. Because there is no fuel filter and the sock in the tank is the only protection the pump has when it gets clogged there is a slight loss in fuel pressure that can affect performance. I personally have ran non ethanol fuel in my 08 v6 for the last several years on the thinking that my truck was built before flex fuel and wasn’t designed to run on it.

I have a 200 series land Cruiser and just run cheapest name brand but that is not always as it appears .
Ethanol Free is not a local option for me , I’m in Pa , just on the PA / NJ line , I still have to travel 45 mins out to a non emissions testing county to buy non-ethanol gas , I usually fill up the truck and bring a 30 gallon drum for fuel for the bikes and atvs .
In Pennsylvania we have the highest tax at .81 cents a gallon is a huge rip off .
I have a friend who is executive for Sunoco , they just buy there fuel on the open market , Sunoco has not produced gas since they did away with 94 octane 6+ years ago .
Sunoco makes there money with the stores and just buys gas that meet the standards and rebrands gas.
Thanks for the info on the fuel pump socks .

93 OCT and Lucas Oil Fuel Injector cleaner is what I run every fill up.

I run 93 due to a knock (ping) that I noticed many years ago when I first bought my Tacoma. There was a TSB from Toyota to fix this that is covered many times over in this forum. Essentially it was re-flashing/programming the ECU to retard timing a very little bit to get rid of the knock(ping). It only knocked on very hot summer days and/or when pulling a trailer under heavy throttle. I know some will say buying 93 for our Tacoma's is a waste of money but it corrected the issue I was getting an have not had any trouble since. My motor has 206,4xx miles on it as of this post FWIW.

Are you saying that you've bought 93 octane instead of doing the TSB? Or that the ping persisted after the TSB?

Funny this came up. I have always used the Costco reg here in Calif. But with the cheep prices I started using the premium. It seems to run down the fwy just a bit smoother but could be my isolation mind playing games??

It's been down to $1.29, then you get the $.05 off with Rewards, too. Hard to not say full when it's this cheap.

So, 206,4xx miles. Let's say you average 18 mpg. That's 11,467 gallons of gas. Even if 93 octane is $0.15 more per gallon, that's $1720. A more realistic $0.40 difference is almost 5k. ls that cheaper than the TSB? I'm not judging, genuinely curious.

My old truck, a 1991, hated running on 10% ethanol. The 22R-E does have a knock sensor but I doubt it was very effective. In 1990s we here in Colorado got pure gas in the summer and blended in the winter, so it wasn't that did of a deal. When they went to blended year-round I had to start finding alternatives.

My Tacoma doesn't seem to mind it. I have a station that sells ethanol-free and if I'm near by when I need to fill up I use it. But mostly I don't worry and just use 87 (which is mid grade in Colorado) from a reputable station (we have Conoco, Sinclair, Exxon, Shell). I get slightly better gas mileage on pure gas but otherwise I really can't tell.

My main reasoning is just to limit exposure of the soft rubber to ethanol since it deteriorated them on my 1991. I'm not even sure it's a problem anymore since surely the OEMs have formulated the rubber to tolerate it now.

These days with crappy ethanol the higher the octane the more Ethanol is added its cheap way to raise octane numbers . usually not a problem but if it sits you can get phase separation .
I’m in the Boating and Powersports business I see a lot of gas related problems .
Blended gasoline gets transferred around , ethanol usually blended at the distribution terminal , once Ethanol is added to the gas the ethanol part becomes Hydroscopic and absorbs water any where and everywhere , between the truck and dirty gas station tanks , that’s why I avoid mom and pop small fuel stations .
Back in the day when all gas was non ethanol there was a product called dry gas ... it was just ethanol and most people did not know anything about this wonder product .
And they still sell it , redundant if your in one of those mandatory states , Pa gets 450 million from the GOV and must do a certain amount vehicle auto emissions which is also a Hugh rip off .
You can’t trust any fuel station , just had weight and measures out to a local Shell , someone put E85 in a 10% tank can’t trust any station these days .
I test the E-0 ethanol free stuff every time , just takes some food dye .

OP, FYI Costco, Shell, and perhaps Sam's fuel are graded as Top Tier gas by the industry. Meaning it has the most cleaning additives and highest refinery standards.

Whelp, here in CA non ethanol gas is non existent and with gas still up in the higher 2$ range (2.50-2.90) all the truck will ever get is good ole 87 E10. But i have never had an issue, truck runs great, especially with the HPTuner tune from JustDSM.

I will run a bottle of Redline SI-1 fuel system cleaner through every 10-20k miles (as i remember) to make sure injectors (as the Redline has the highest concentration of PEA are clean but thats about it.

Best thing i have found to combat shitty ethanol gas sitting (like in a generator, motorcycles etc) is Star Tran Enzyme treatment. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014419UQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Got a genny that i fire up every 3-4 months or so with at least 2 year old gas in it that has been super treated with the stuff, fires up first pull every time. (of course i drain the carb after running)
