Ughhhh, spent the last 2 days reading this thread, AND no dyno!

 

CAI dont really add dyno numbers to any car theyre put on. This has been debunked on so many different platforms. You may see 1 or 2 hp but thats insignificant and inconclusive.

 

I know its not about a 3rd gen taco, but i had K and n short ram intake on my 2007 4.0 MT ranger. I had the k and n drop in first for about 3 years, then i installed the whole intake and had it for about 4 years. No issues with MAF.

To some it may sound like im just bullshitting but i did feel better throttle response and it felt like it added a bit more grunt. I was happy with it, would not do it again though, i paid about 700$ for it.

I didnt have to downshift as much on same hills, thats when i knew it actually made a difference. Also, it sounded great, like a small turbo haha!

For the taco, i might replace the intake tube down the road just for some noise. I already installed the flow accelerator and put in trd drop in filter. Also, removed the charcoal filter. Will go for a ride today and will see.

Edit: belive it or not, i finished reading the whole thread and no dyno results haha! Took me 3 days.

David Vizard is wicked smaart. I’ve got a couple of old Austin Minis and a few of his books that i’ve been referencing since the 1990’s. His explanation in the video of how K&N filters work is interesting and something I didn’t know.
I still don’t believe K&N’s claims that there’s 17HP to be gained with their filter and CAI though. These days, vehicle manufacturers would never leave that kind of untapped power on the table for such an easy and obvious mod......BTW- I also don’t believe people that say that good, name-brand reusable filters hurt engines either......

I say buy one if you like the look and the extra sound they make......

 

Yeah, I'm sorta in the same boat. I really don't trust the HP claims by K&N. What I do trust is the 220+ reviews on there drop in, with the reviews being mostly positive, with a great number of people claiming better fuel mileage and pep.

The only time a CAI will add to vehicle power is if the intake sizing from the factory is criminally undersized and restrictive to the size it needs to be for the engine to take in the air it demands properly.

The OE intake is sized plenty large enough to handle what the 3rd gen engine demands. The same can be said for 2nd gens. As a matter of fact, here is a pro tip. the 3rd gen intake is sized large enough to be able to handle 350+ HP boost from 2nd gens on the hardware and the software side easily.

The easiest way to track gains from intake swap outs if access to a dyno is not available is to log MAF GM/ s. or Lbs/ min. changes between intake swap outs. If the intake truly is restrictive you will find an increase in overall readouts at full WOT runs. The magic truly is in the numbers.

Boosted set ups are the ones which benefit greatly from intake set up swap outs. This is especially true once making big boost numbers and things as simple as the actual air filter itself could prove to be a restriction.

Most people are just looking for an excuse to work on their car or modify it really.

 

Exactly, and they either a) Invent reasons to mod or b) Try to justify stupid myths or legends or c) Fix non existent problems that only occur in the heads of people who don't understand basic mechanics or physics.

 

Another thing to consider is Toyota uses the same size air filter on the V8 Tundra's, so how restrictive can it truly be for our V6's? Me personally, I'm going with the TRD intake flow acelerator and a K&N drop in, anything more doesn't make sense too me. YMMV.

What I got from that video was that I should remove the K&N drop-in filter from my wife's Outback and replace it with a WIX.

Hu ... I know when to shift not by the noise but by feel . You can tell when the truck needs to be shifted . Why would u do it by noise .. that doesn’t make sense .

 

Good thing OP never ran that dyno test Regardless of the results the debate about the validity of the test would have gone on another 33 pages. Science never wins on TW lol

 

I think some determine engine strain by the noise and some through vibration. In the end it’s a perception thing , feel, sound, sight(gauge). All will vary by load and terrain. Personally, I’m way past needing more noise in my life.
