What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

With all this free time I decided to repack my front driver side wheel bearing , well a simple job turned into an annoying trip to the parts store, funny thing is I had no bearing noise ....yet

 

Installed my Alcans today, took a lot of ratchet strap action to get them to line up where they needed to be but it's all buttoned up.

The ride so much better than the Expos I had on previously, and with a couple hundred pounds of tools + old leaf springs in the bed, they aren't sagging at all (the Expos did).



Also put some shims on them and that seems to have gotten rid of my driveline vibes at freeway speeds



Only issue I ran into is the Alcans seem to have pushed my axle back a bit and it looks like I may have clearance issues when I stuff the rear tires against the back of the wheel well. Gonna have to test it out soon and see if that's the case. Oh, and Alcan sent me the wrong size u-bolts haha. I gave them the specs for the OME u-bolts off OME's website but they sent me ones that were too wide. Just reused my old ones for now until I get the right ones.

Overall really happy with these, so much nicer than the AP Expos I had on before.

Installed my front suspension and lower ball joint this weekend! Now I gotta figure out leveling. Rear leaf pack next.

Also that new cap is nice! I'm casually looking for a mid height bc another couple inches would be nice.

Started down this path today...can only end in heartbreak and disappointment, but hell, let’s give it a shot anyway.

 

ADS keeps sending out shocks with too short hoses. What’s up with that?

 

Wicked good looking truck! I remember doing my leaf springs and not having ratchets, so my brother and I had to haul hard af to get those things to seat.

I did em right before a road trip too, and after about 400 miles I noticed a rattling, and at the next gas stop I noticed two nuts had rattled down a ways. Finger tightened as best I could and made it home fine. Live and learn

 

Haha yeah it's important to re-torque the rear suspension bolts after the first few hundred miles, I've learned that the hard way too. Had a front eyelet bolt work itself loose on my last set of leaf springs.

When you say the ride better, how would you describe that exactly?
My rear suspension needs some work and i'm trying figure out if it's my dakar leafs or nitrocharger shocks that need it (or maybe both).

And as far as the axle being pushed back; you should look into the all-pro axle relocation plates. I used them to move mine back 3/4", but you could just flip them to move it forward the same amount.

 

Got my bypasses finally on from @Toytec Lifts Still need to test and tune but took it through a big dip and it’s super smooth.

 

Ride is smoother, less jarring in the back. They are built to hold more weight than the Expos are but the Expos had a harsher feel to them.

I may have to try the relocation plates but I'm going to try and flex it a bit first just in case they might clear after all, but if I ever go bigger than 33s someday it'll be an issue for sure

 

you think your shims may be the reason its sitting forward more? im use to them being installed seperate from the pack.. (if the shim was machined for it, then it shouldnt be an issue.)

 

He’s not the only one that’s had his axle pushed back after installing Alcans, seems to be pretty common

 

I’d love a stepside bed, but I also never use my bed really. I like the way they look.

 

Gotcha. That's good to know. Jarring is definitely the word i'd use to describe how my rear suspension feels currently....

Yea I didn't have issues until I put fender flares on mine. The relocation plates solved all my issues.

What length U-bolts do you need for the new pack?
