What kind of camper do you have?

Apex Ultralite 249RBS, about 4800 empty.

Wd hitch with 800lb bars, have sway control but not installed yet. I do have airbags but leave them low / around 10psi due to WDH.

Towing short distances (in FL). It does “ok”...still working on setup. I keep it under 60 as well.

 

Welcome to the ApexTaco family! I have an Apex Nano 208BHS, so a bit lighter, but similar profile. It does it, but as you said, definitely need WDH with anti-sway and usually keep it around 60mph top speed. I did have airbags but they never worked right and my WDH (E2) seems to work great keeping the truck level, so I ended up just removing the bags.

 

What about your side mirrors for towing?
I pull my larger campers with my o4 F250, but thinking about trading in my 28' Cougar for a smaller camper that my o8 Prerunner could safely tow.
My 36' Lacrosse bumper pull has my F250 towing maxed out just empty.
So it just sits at the site and is called "home".

 

Haven't upgraded yet, will probably try some cheaper strap-ons next time.

 

That's kinda what i thought too.
But after reading more into the topic/posts, I'm not sure it'd be worth the trouble since my Taco doesn't have the towing package,
Unless i got a small Casitas. But, my o4 F250 is a gas burner and only has 140k miles on it.

 

I use

Dometic DM-2912 Milenco Grand Aero3 Towing Mirror (Twin Pack)

these mirrors and they work pretty well with the Tacomas. Just mount them to the bottom side of the mirror rather than the top.

 

Wide angle camera worked wonders for me. My stock mirrors are pretty much set to see the outside of both lanes down the flanks, and the camera catches whatever is riding/approaching either side of my rear.

Much cheaper than replacement mirrors, and less "shakey" than strap on mirrors.

That's a cool idea. I've seen em on motor homes, but hadn't really noticed one on a travel trailer. My 2 campers are a 2015 and 2016, so maybe those are newer options?
I'm just used to the big extendable mirrors on my F250 when I tow or towed my campers.

I have a rearview camera on my trailer too, but I still wouldn't tow very far without towing mirrors. I always (even when not towing) have my side mirrors adjusted out wide, with only a little overlap with what I normally see in my truck's rearview. Even so, when towing you end up with some pretty big blindspots on the side of the trailer, especially on the passenger side. The BSM helps too, if you have that.

And I'm saying that with an Apex Nano which is a 7.5' wide trailer, so I imagine it is even worse with a normal 8' wide one.

 

I’ve got a 2020 wolf pup 18TO with a slide which weighs about 4,000lbs dry/empty but 5,000 lbs with gear & my little Taco pulls her pretty good

 

That's interesting, I've never seen an asymmetric stabilizer jack set up like that. Seems like the one right behind the driver's side wheel wouldn't do much. (unless I'm just getting tricked by perspective?)

My 2013 PreRunner Sr5 should tow a 2019 Wolfpup 18T0 pretty well, correct?

Can anyone recommend the largest RV trailer you can pull that has the following items:
1. 2 axles (a must). any type, does not have to be torsion. I realize it likely is not needed but would prefer.
2. small slide (for dinette purpose specifically)
3. queen bed and small bunkhouse bed setup
4. GVW of 5000-5500 lbs?

Was looking at the 2020 JAY FLIGHT SLX 8 242BHS but its too heavy with a UVW of 5505 lbs and a GVW of 7000 lbs well exceeding the Taco. The next size down in the series has no slide. Not sure of other brands that meet this requirement.

 

I can only think of one that checks all those boxes but I don't think you'll like my answer.... Flagstaff HW29SC.

Thats a lot to ask while keeping it that light, I'm afraid.

 

Check out the Apex Nano 208BHS. I think it fits most of your checkboxes - has dual axles, dinette on a slide, double over double bunks in the back, queen bed in the front (optional murphy style), and dry weight is 4000#.

I might be biased, but I think it looks good and matches up with a Tacoma as well, especially a Cement one.

You might also be able to squeak by with the slightly larger 245BHS, but personally I think that is getting to be too much for a Tacoma, especially the tongue weight and total weight once loaded with your equipment.
