Another reason for cashing 60 out. With a 120 rollover, it should be a no-brainer. However, all situations are different. GL with the process and get your VA shit wired tight ahead of time.

I’ve done this to a few Air Force officers here at the base. The lower their rank the more it seems to effect their sanity.

Wrong, you just lose time off and let's face it, who really works in the last 120 days of a 20+ year career.

Have things changed? Selling leave gets you only base pay. Using the leave gets all pay and allowances.
Her in San Diego a month of allowances would be $3500

No but most people don't get to carry 120 days in the books so not many can sell 60. If you sell them that's 2 extra months of base pay plus all the entitlements you get during the days you are 'reporting' to work until your EOAS. If you have something you can do instead and aren't able to fuck off then taking that time makes sense but for many situations selling it makes the most financial sense.

Your retirement date stays the same, so you get pay and allowances until that point. The difference is your leave starts earlier vs a 2 month cash out at the end.

Understand or do I need to explain further?

They don't reduce your BAH just because you're on terminal leave.

So if you've gotten another position already, or have some means of reducing your expenses dramatically after your last day... Burning the leave > selling it back.

YMMV, Your service may vary... etc.

    I never said they did.

Unless you have a job lined up and can start immediately, the $$ choice is cash 60 out days, unless you need the time off.

No it doesn't differ between service, however you are DHS not DoD, so I don't know what applies.

Or if you're planning on moving somewhere cheaper and are stationed somewhere more expensive. Say, JBLM with a BAH of 2.5k, and you already know you're moving to your parent's old house while in transition. So you leave early, pocket 5k + 2 mo's of base pay, vs just two month's base pay while paying two month's rent. Assuming you get BAH, if you don't the barracks dweller choice might be the cash out instead.

    ...

    All of Bravo Company/Troop's tanks?

Yep cashout 60 days you lose your bah for those 60 days. You still get the bah for teminal leave. But if you think of it as cash from the gov theres always a catch, in favor of the gov.

Actually you don't, you're just "working" (in reality, transitioning) for the extra 60 days. You lose no $$ just time off, as your ETIS never changes, then pocket 60 days of base pay.

I did this and it was worth it.

If you are on leave you arent "working" is my point. You can save the money just the same and be on leave

Very little was being done during that 60 days. I did a few test flights, but could have pawned them off. The day after my official retirement, I was paid a little over $13k before taxes.

I started terminal leave and a new job on the same day.

Made a STUPID amount of money before I was officially retired in 2011.

If you have that option, then it's the right choice. I couldn't start a contracting job while on terminal leave. Everyone's situation is different and they need to weigh the options for their benefit.

Yeah, I started with a telecom and they hired me sight unseen based on my background. Once that gig expired I was able to transition to a contractor job, and onboarding there was considerably slower.
