Cold Air Intakes

I’m back, with another question

I’ve heard good things about K&N
I’ve heard good things about the AFE
I’ve heard bad about both, and I’m wondering if any of y’all have either installed and what y’all opinions are?

 

I would spend my money on other mods unless your goal is just increasing intake noise.

 

Welcome to the forum. Most around here hate them because you already have a CAI. I have the AFE setup and really like the sound.

 

Don't waste your time or money. Use the already installed stock cold air intake the factory put in.

 

CAIs do nothing but make noise. The bottleneck of this engine is most definitely NOT the intake. I dont trust any oiled filter. That crap is getting burned in your engine and all over you valves and pistons... no ty.

 

The existing PVC system on these engines puts more oil in the combustion chamber to be burned than any oiled filter ever could.

 

I wouldnt recommend a cold air intake, I put one of a Nissan Sentra that I had once and one day it was rainy and I had to drive over a puddle of water that looked like a small lake (I couldnt avoid it because it was on a ramp on the highway) and the cold air intake soaked up some of the water and the vehicle never worked fine after that, it started having issues ever since then. Just keep the factory air intake, the risk of setting off dash lights and messing up your engine isnt worth the gain of a few horsepower (at best) and more noise.

The cold air intake that I had installed on the Nissan Sentra had the filter behind the front bumper so it just soaked up the water like it was a vacuum cleaner. The issues that I started to have after that were that lights started to pop up on my dashboard, the steering wheel would randomly lock up while driving, and after a few months it started to turn off when I was stopped at stop signs because of red lights and it started to shake and turn off alot.

 

Ouch expensive way to find out water is one of the few elements you can’t compress..you bent the rods.

 

Tacoma's already have cold air intakes and the inlet is located in the front passenger wheel well.

 

I would recommend leaving the factory air intake then, those Toyota engineers know what their doing.

!. You can still hydro lock a Tacoma if the crossing is deep enough.

What can I say? we all do stupid stuff growing up and at the time I was young and couldnt afford a brand new car so I tried to fix up a cheap car that I bought used from a private seller. The vehicle drove fine until I put the cold air intake on it and it soaked up water from the intake.

 

I had a K&N on a WRX and it would have issues after using a car wash. I went to a different brand that had much longer intake plenum piping.

 

Same face, same line.

 

Skip the CAI hype. You already have a CAI. Skip fad filters, go with OEM. OEM paper filters have the filtering you NEED, without the contamination that oiled filters give off onto your MAF. It’s not about oil contamination INTO your engine lol. It’s about not coating your sensors in bullshit. AFE pro dry doesn’t filter for shit. Stick with OEM stock.
