Just got a new to me 06. Love the truck but not crazy about the key system.
When I bought it, I only received a gray key with a FOB that is about wore out. So I went to the dealer and $120 later I have a black key that will open the passenger door only and sets off the alarm every time. Of course when the alarm is on, the black key will not start the truck.
Is there a FOB-less option for unlocking doors and starting the truck?
    Thanks.

Back in 2006, your truck should have come with 2 black keys, each with a key fob, and one pointless grey valet key. All of the keys have a chip inside so you can start the truck. Without the chip, the keys should still open the doors, without setting off an alarm.

I don't remember my 2008 having a keyhole on the passenger door though.

You have multiple things going on.

You have an aftermarket alarm. There is no factory installed alarm on a Taco. There are switches in the door locks that should disarm the alarm when you turn the key. Either the switch in the passenger side lock is bad or the alarm system was wired by a dumb ass.

Your new key doesn’t work in the drivers door for 1 of the following reasons.
    1. The guy at the dealer is a dumb ass and cut the key wrong. The proper way is to get the key code by VIN and cut a nice key with a properly calibrated key machine
    2. The lock needs lubed. My locksmith recommends Triflow.
    3. The lock is worn out and needs to have the tumblers(wafers) replaced.

The door locks are easy to remove. Roll the window down. There’s a black plastic plug in the edge of the door. Pop it out. Loosen the 10mm headed bolt. There’s plastic fingers to keep the bolt from falling. Pull the lock out of the door. Take the lock and your new key to a locksmith and let them figure it out.

After that, if the drivers door lock doesn’t disarm the alarm, the alarm installer is a dumb ass.

The grey key is the valet key. In a Tacoma it works exactly the same as a black key.

There's a problem with the driver's door lock system. Does the lock turn? If it does then most likely the plastic clip that retains the lock rod is broken. If the lock doesn't turn it might just need lubrication. Or any of the lock cylinders might be coded differently because it was replaced at some point. Toyota lock cylinders are the easiest to work with.

Very few aftermarket alarms have a wire connection to disarm the alarm which means very few aftermarket alarms can be turned off with a key in a lock cylinder. At least 95% of aftermarket alarms must be turned off with either the ignition key and the valet switch after the alarm has already sounded off, or of course the remote control (fob).

The easiest by far solution for a fobless option for unlocking the doors and starting the truck is to fix the driver's door lock situation and simply unplug the alarm. The alarm being unplugged will most likely have no affect on the truck because very few aftermarket alarms use a normally open starter kill circuit.

My aftermarket alarm arms and disarms with the OEM fob, arms and disarms with the door key locks, arms and disarms with the door panel switches, except the drivers door panel lock switch does not arm the alarm. That way, sitting in the truck, I can lock the doors without arming the alarm. If I don’t have the fob handy and I want to lock the doors and arm the alarm, I lock the doors with the right door panel switch and then close the door.

My installer knows what he’s doing.

Wel, I tried lube in the drivers door lock (a dab of 3:1 oil) but no luck.
Next up is removing the lock from the door panel.
When my alarm is activated, neither key will not start the truck. The only way is to use the Fob to turn it off, then start.
I looked and the window tag says its a Pursuit brand security system.
    Thanks

That is hilarious! Leave a window partially cracked open and a thief can disarm your alarm with the door lock switch in your door. Now THAT is security! Hahahaha!!!

What brand and model is the aftermarket alarm?

Your alarm has a starter kill which is why the truck won't start when the alarm is on. In that respect your alarm is working exactly as it should. You wrote that you wanted the alarm to stop working, I wrote that you should unplug it, I don't understand the debate anymore.

As for the lock not working you're going to need to remove it, make sure the lock rod that goes to the door latch does in fact move with the lock cylinder disconnected, and inspect the lock and its tumblers.

I don't remember, but does the Tacoma not have a built in alarm?

On my 4Runner, it has sensors in the doors. If you try to use the inner door handle, the door will relock itself and the horn beeps. If the window is partially down and you try to squeeze past it, the alarm beeps. I've already had to break into my 4Runner once lol

I had a similar situation happen to me.
Had a nice new unchipped key made from the VIN.

It was tough on the door locks at first, but eventually smoothed out.

There's probably some some crap in the lock cylinders built up over the years. You might want to pull the door handles off and flush out the cylinders with brakeleen or something.

It could just be worn out too if you use it all the time. A locksmith should be able to rebuild it if needed.

I live in a very low crime area and I don’t leave valuables or backpacks in the truck. The blinking light serves my purpose very well. Besides, most thefts from cars are smash and grab where they bust the window, grab what they can and run. There’s no point in the starter disable because the truck already has the immobilizer.

I’m not going to debate this any further with you. You have been wrong in so many posts by applying your professional generic knowledge to Tacoma specific problems.

At least when I'm wrong I admit it which is directly opposite of you.

As I predicted you refused to write the make and model of your aftermarket alarm.

Your installer "that knows what he's doing" has given thieves 2 different opportunities to disarm your alarm without a remote control and without a key that's coded correctly. That is extremely amusing to me and you have actually made my day for me. Thank you.

Your reasoning of not living in high crime area for the exceptionally poor quality installation of your truck's security system is even more hilarious. The more I think about these replies the better it gets! Thank you!
