Noticed this chip on my tailgate. rather deep. I tried using the touch up pen but in each attempt it looked like it would need multiple coats and may end up looking worse when all was said and done.

I'm surprised to see black underneath, I'm assuming this is the bare metal?

Anyone else get chips similar to this? If so how have you handled it?

I'm thinking of just using the clear coat part of the pen to seal it, as looks wise it isnt too bad from afar.

You should certainly get some touch up paint on that... with your climate and salt in the wi get it will be an issue if left unattended. I’d hit it with isopropyl alcohol, then touch up paint, then wax. Use a pin head or toothpick to get a tiny dot of paint into the affected area.

Will do. The applicator for my touch up.pen kinda sucks in that it's hard to form a pool of paint to draw from with a toothpick but I'll go back at it. Definitely dont want to have to repaint this thing if it rusts.

I had a rock chip down to the bare metal on the hood of my 1st Gen. Started to rust in a couple days. I would get some paint on it right away.

I managed to get a pool of paint going, used a toothpick to poke it in. Will maybe do a second coat in a little bit and then hit it with clear. will post pics.

Take a scrap of a paper towel. Twist it really tight and to a point. Use that to dab a point of paint in there.

It was tricky since this chip is so small the tip of the tooth pick cant afford a lot of precision. Here's a zoom up of what it looks like. Full coverage is going to be tricky but it's better than nothing at the moment.

Most paint pens have a twist off section that have a brush attached

Too small and deep for a brush, I'd end up getting touch up everywhere and it'd look bigger and worse.

The paint flattens. So when you put it on heavy with the brush it may first appear you out too much on, then a day or so afterwards it’s looks fine.

The pen tips sucks and usually are complete garbage. Toothpick will work though. Multiple coats is the key.

Pen tip is out of the question, it's way too big and awkward. I'll have another stab at it with a toothpick for coat #2 (or something thinner?) in a few days and then seal it with a drop or two of clearcoat.

I gave up trying to touch up the plastic front bumper, paint comes off that thing way too easily and often, but this spot on the tailgate is really getting to me for some reason.

Try using a sponge or buffing pad, put just a dot on it and dab it on the spot that needs touching up. It’ll help evenly cover the area without it blobbing.

Might end up going for this as it seems to suit my needs perfectly.

How did it turn out? I just noticed what looks like a rock chip on my tailgate today :-( the truck is only like 2-3 weeks old.
