Who uses a 3x on anything more than an entry level bike?

    Cliff's Notes time...
Long story, but I will try to make it quick. I have a 2006 Trek 6500, used to ride frequently with my son until he went to heaven in 2009 and I haven't really ridden much since then. I want to get back into it and was wondering if I could get the 3x converted to a 1x. So, I'm entry level, but not so much entry level if that makes sense.

    Thanks.

1x systems are everywhere. And for a reason. You get all the range you need without the hassle of a front mech. Less weight(negligible), less moving parts/less things to break, and easier to use.

Converting your bike to a 1x drivetrain can be done but you have to consider whether or not it's worth converting what you have. Rim brakes, 26" wheels, and a dated geometry will already set you back some in terms of overall riding in today's time.

By the time you're done converting your bike to a 1x drivetrain, it'll most likely be more costly and not very time efficient as compared to getting a new bike. Even with a 1x drivetrain, you're not addressing the rim brakes, 26" wheels, or lack of a modern geometry.

Can any of you guys identify what year/spec this specialized is? IF I can figure out what it is Ill have a better idea of its value. Its a Specialized Epic listed locally. It appears to have a 2x or 3x drive train and Fox front shock. Listing says wheels are 26.5 which has to be wrong right? Its either 26 or maybe 27.5 idk. Thompson bars and seatpost, Chris King headset, Newly rebuilt Fox 32. Asking 700

Didn't mean to come off snarky, but your user name has Mountain Biker in it which implies you are in fact a mountain biker. Sounds like you are a little rusty though. But to answer your question, it's not worth converting and old bike like that. Get a tune up on your old ride, and if you get serious about getting back into the sport, give us your price range and we will point you in the right direction of some good options.

One of my buddies rocks that same bike and is a machine on it. If you wanted to cheap out, you could take off the front derailleur and lever, and just position the chain on whichever ring would make sense, prob the middle or biggest one depending on the range. Gives you functionally 1x, and gives you breathing room to decide if you want to get back into it long term without spending any money.

Even with the upgrades on the one listed for sale on someone's local classifieds, I wouldn't go anywhere near that price.

Truth. I rocked a 28T front ring on my bronson shamelessly. But my Sentinel and my Stache are both 30T

You're more generous than me. To many changes in the last 12ish years to components and geometry.
