I get a pretty noticeable little "kick" when I release the clutch in my 5 speed. The slower I release the clutch less harsh the kick is. It happens on all gears when shifting. I know manual cars will kick if you release the clutch too fast, but mine is definitely more sensitive and less forgiving than any other high mileage manual I've driven, to the point where I want to fix it. Does this sound like a clutch thing or a transmission thing? Any help is appreciated, just seeing if anyone else has had this experience. The truck has 240k miles.

I think I would check the Engine and transmission mounts something major loose in the drive train.

It is one thing to dump the clutch completely different then what your describing at least to me.

I have only had something like you describe with something broken

Sounds like the clutch to me.
    My .20 fwiw...
One alternative and easy check is a common problem for our older Tacomas.
The plastic bushing that the shifter ball seats in, usually wears out around 100k.
You have probably replaced this I would assume.

If not, pay attention to your shifter as you release the clutch shifting gears.
If you feel a simultaneous jerk in the shifter that could indicate this as your problem.
With this worn out bushing my transmission was popping out of gear when I would release the clutch.
This was because the shifter could not align the transmission gears properly.
    Its a super easy fix.

It always goes into gear nicely, no grinds or popouts, only when disengaging the clutch in a new gear. But ill look out for that.

In addition to the transmission and motor mounts checkout your driveshaft carrier bearing

Then your jolt might be something I don`t even pay attention to any more .

Does it happen just pushing the clutch without shifting letting off on the throttle let you were shifting at like 40 mph or so.

It happens when I release the clutch in gear. I believe it's most noticeable when in the lower gears (which makes sense). I have to be extra easy when releasing the clutch for it to shift smoothly.

A jolt indicates to me that there was load on the clutch when you released it, so either torque was being transferred from the wheels to the engine or vise versa. So, maybe, assuming your not on the gas or engine braking, it isn't releasing as you would expect. That would lead me to looking at the master/slave cylinder and checking to see if they move smoothly.

If there is much play when you give it a good shake by hand it's probably bad

I am guessing that it is related to spring wrap. A cheap way to "fix" this is to put an (AAL) add a leaf in.

Might be challenging since its more of a "feel" thing but i'll give it a shot.

Well, the problem is no more! All it took was flushing the clutch fluid. Happy it was something simple.

Around $26,000 worth of unleaded in the fuel tank.
Could it be the slip yoke sticking?
