Do you have to drill mounting holes in your fenders to bolt up the 01-04 flares or do they bolt into the existing holes on the underside like the older models?

It sounds like you can bolt them right up using the holes in the fender wells. It sounds like purchasing new moulding that has 3m adhesive is a good idea. Clean fender really well before applying it. This is what I plan to do. I don't think I want dirt and grim to get in behind the flare.

Do you know if the cut out spot for the fuel tank door will line up with a 2000 tacoma?

Yes it will, even if you get the big ones like the link he listed in this forum, the fuel door will line up with the fender flare never the less. You probably won’t be able to fit all of the screws into the holes though and it’ll just be a hassle making it so they fit correctly. I honestly recommend just getting the OE style fender flares.

OE on my truck is that chrome molding, doesn't have much protection and those things are worth more that gold lol I have been trying to find a replacement set.

I mean the OE style fender flares. Bushwacker makes a style that came stock on some of the older 1st gens. Here’s the link. I run them on my 97 and they bolt on fine with no issues at all. https://www.bushwacker.com/bushwacker-31914-02-oe-style-fender-flares-front-and-rear

Thanks for posting those Owen. I think those are what i'm looking for. Those pretty much look OEM. How long have you had them? The ones I see have a little different contour.... I wonder if the newer ones look a little different.

i forgot where I got them but if you look you’ll probably be able to find a deal for some for around 380-400. I think I got mine for around that.

another tip: move to Montana so you don’t have to pay tax

Thanks for the tip. I have Chemical Guys VRP. Hopefully it will do a good job protecting.

I need to bump this to get another question answered please. I like “OE style” flares from Bushwhacker, but I’m looking to install a set of flares on a 96 Tacoma 2WD truck. I’ve got 8” wide wheels and need about an inch of coverage. Back in the day I had to use 4WD fenders and bed to get the flared look on 87 Toyota truck. Are the 1st gen Tacomas made with different fenders for the 2WD & 4WD trucks? If so, does anyone know where to get 2WD fender flares?

front fenders are different between 5lug 2WD and 6lug prerunner/4wd
The beds are all the same (except for flareside ones)

It looks like the front wheel arch is not the same. Maybe @mjbtaco can tell if you could put flares on a 2wd fender?
