If you spend enough time in traffic, you will appreciate the idea of getting somewhere else.

Like another user said, the harder it is to get to, the less people there are.

Don’t take this the wrong way either, but if someone is tearing up tires that much offroading, it’s usually because they are spinning on rocks too much, scraping against them on the sidewalls, and driving over them too fast. I used to work for USFS, BLM and private environmental consulting companies and had to drive on remote mountain and desert mine roads to survey them, and never had tire issues offroad. Also, we always had new rookie seasonals trash the work trucks offroading them- numerous sidewall bulges, punctured sidewalls, tread chips, dents and even broken LCA’s.

I’d tell them to lighten up on the lead-foot and use lower gears in 4wd. Did they listen? No... numbskulls would try to u-turn on single track trails and get high centered on the edge of the road cut facing the cliff (“Mike, the truck is too long to do that!!“), they’d get stuck against boulders while turning on steep side hills (“dang Mike, if that boulder wasn't there, you could’ve rolled it!” ), and one idiot thought an emergency truck brake failure ramp was a official freeway offramp! (No Steve, that was not the Cleghorn offramp!”)

As for why I still do it? We like to get to places where others rarely go in the desert for fun (rock hounding, hiking, camping, etc.). I’m not into it for just the driving part as much as others are here, but the exploring part makes driving off-road fun.

Could be, but check out Ord Mtn. Near Barstow, or Santiago Pk. (Indian truck trail side) in OC.

And PS, I have been doing this job for a minute or two.:)

Yeah, those are good trails for new tires, and I admit that it’s hard not to spin out on loose rocks with any longbed pickup on steep hills- unless you have good traction control like our Tacos have. Case in point - I don’t recommend driving up the last hill on Opal Mountain near Barstow. As for me, abandoned mine roads aren’t maintained though, so anything can go flat on them if driven on carelessly, so I have to go slow. Ive always used KO’s and KO2’s on my personal and private work truck too, damn idiots popped those too! :annoyed:

It seems that it is all about the thrill and I can compare the thrill of rock crawling and severe off roading to gambling at a casino . The thrill of it along with the chance of damage and loss is real in both . The main difference is you will never come home with your truck in better condition after an off road session , with gambling you can come home with more than you started with . Both pastimes are gambling however ,along with sky diving , skin diving , skiing motocross or whatever so get your thrill on however you like !

Off Roading for me is a means to and end. Getting to some nice fishing spots, and carrying extra weight is why I will upgrade my suspension.

I always feel like I am going to roll over when I go off roasting. I think it’s scary.

I like to go off roading to get to somewhere remote. However, I don’t like to go off roading just to off road unless it’s to sharpen skills.

I explained this to my nephew the other day about enduro motorcycle riding vs video games. Some people enjoy an element of danger and like the adrenaline of if they mess up they get hurt or die. I don’t play video games.

I don’t know what you mean, I’m not disagreeing with anyone, some people just find pleasure in different things. I’m not a violent person and I avoid physical confrontation.

I’m saying I am all about teaching fashionable one liners to our youth. It’s rad.

I tried to search an 80s meme to express how I deal with today’s video game kids...and I got lost in lolz. You’ll have to take my word for it. Teaching kids with one-liners is one of like 3 things I’m good/bad at, depending on a person perspective on what an adult should be passing off onto the young.
