I've put off making one of these for long enough. I knew little about vehicles before taking on this project. I could only change my own oil. However, I started looking for a hunting truck with a budget of $4k...then $5k...$6k...etc. On Jan 17, 2019 I found this 2001 Double Cab Tacoma SR5 4x4 with leather interior and 265k miles on it for $7k (I know, I know a little much). But it came with it's own defense hardware/murder weapon:
    56947709717__8AEF8DB5-3C15-4C4E-A2BA-94DC43D1AF7D.jpg

First thing I did was change out all of the fluids, including a transmission pan drop/filter change. The transmission fluid was disgusting and it was shifting roughly. But after examining the magnets and filter screen, I decided to proceed with a full flush, now the tranny runs very smooth. Unfortunately, I didn't take any pics.

Next, I put seafood (EDIT: seaFOAM) in the intake, crank case, and gas tank:

Started investigating an issue with cold starts a couple of weeks later. It would hesitate when put in D and would clunk and lunge forward after getting up to ~2k RPMs...Never quite figured that one out at the time, it just went away as the weather warmed up.

    Feb 2019
Stumbled upon a FB marketplace post that showed a wrecked TRD. Snagged the Elocker rear end +4wd computer and wiring harness for $450 from a donor truck of the same year and gear ratio:

Found out my truck was prewired for the 4wd controller computer and RR diff lock button. Plugged it in and it worked:

Started reconditioning the axle housing and testing the locker actuator (It works!), broke the position sensor in the process...$50 mistake:

And finally, just replaced the thermostat and radiator hoses. Temps prior were running 185-208 at one point. Put the jiggle valve at 6 (old thermostat didn't seem to have a jiggle valve). Now highest temp I've seen is 195.

Hopefully I'll finish the rear end rebuild with E locker actuator armor from low range off road by the end of the month.

    To Do List:
    • Suspension overhaul + lift and E locker rear swap: Full OME with 883s. Will replace UCAs w/ SPC adjustable UCAs. Also replacing LBJs and tie rod ends w/ OEM.
    • Repair the dent in passenger side
    • Replace engine and trans mounts
    • Replace drop in bedliner w/ spray liner
    • ?Bed line rocker panels
    • Front bumper/winch
    • Rear swingout bumper
    • Bed rack vs. Camper shell
    • Front e locker vs manual hub conversion.

Got the bearings, retainers, and ABS tone rings pressed on. Rear end has been reassembled. Also finally got the new tires mounted on the wheels.

Finally got the lift on, upper control arms/ball joints replaced, LBJs replaced, and tie rod ends replaced. It was a little more lift than expected, but it rides so much better now. Here’s a before and after.

Bought a camper shell a while back, finally got it on. The paint is in fairly rough shape, the glass lifts are shot, and one of the rotary latches seems to be messed up. Got new ones on the way. Now I want to put a rack on it...
