All right, boys & gurlz, I have put my hiking boots on and am heading out for a "walk". Let's see if I can make 3 miles on my first outing, into the track-less desert north of my humble abode out at the fringes of civilization. :tumbleweed:

I survived, though the many coyote attacks and rattlesnake den encounters proved to be significant challenges. I was also carried aloft, then released, by a large hawk. Such are the ways of the desert Southwest, as you all know.

I'm going to take the truck along the same route to get an accurate idea of the length of my hazard-fraught-but-rewarding trek. :turtleride:

I did. Some yahoos in a big Chevy 4x4 came up behind and made obvious coughing sounds; I'll be packing a large, obvious .357 on my hip on my next walk.

    ...or maybe my lighter and more easily-carried S&W 66 w/ 4" barrel.

If you come out to the Puerco to try them (the sliders) out, let me know; I can stay 6' from you just staying in my truck.

Anyone been down near Alamosa Creek? From what I've researched is that this is/was a really cool drive with camping opportunities near the canyon. Story is that a Texas rancher bought surrounding land and has closed the North end of the road.

From Topo maps and Satellite imagery it appears there is a decent cliff that might have had some climbing on it. Mountain Project is flaky this morning, but coordinates should be around. 33°29'01.4"N 107°31'11.7"W

My understanding is that is Monticello Canyon and yes it is closed by the rancher. It was even on the news because they gated a county road to do it. You are supposed to be able to pay a fee (not sure to who) to gain access to the road. I've never paid for the permit so I can't verify it.

Definitely I think I'm gonna try and get out there this coming weekend, I need to go pick up some coil overs here in a few and get them in the truck so I'll finally have a lift all the way around.
