I know there are a ton of other threads on this very topic but I was looking to get opinions on ceramic coating and PPF based on Tacoma owners in the Pacific Northwest. Given the unique weather we have here, I think the opinions from someone here vs. someone int he Northeast for example would vary significantly.

I know ceramic doesn't have protective properties for road rash and such but I'm thinking PPF might considering its wet for most of the year. I'm sure the trail conditions and variety here make a difference too.

I put this on my new 2020 TRD OR about a month ago:

    https://www.meguiars.com/automotive...easy-use-ceramic-wax-protection-g190526-26-oz

    https://www.amazon.com/Meguiars-G190526-Hybrid-Ceramic-Wax/dp/B06WVQ6MVR

After a month, the rain still acts like it can't get off of that truck fast enough.
And the dirt, pollen, bird doodle, etc. just rinses off with water.
I am very pleased with this product!

I just did a cleaning, clay-bar and ceramic coat on my truck about 2 weeks ago. Washed it twice and still holding up. I researched the interweb and Shine Armour was on all the top reviews.

This makes me curious as I just did my first real detail (dealers "wash" job pre-delivery wasn't really up to my standards and finlly had some free time) But Do you think this I'd need to strip off my recent carnauba wax job prior to putting some of this lovely stuff on? I know an eventual clay baring is in order but I'm thinking that the current layer of wax on the ol girl might prevent this from adhering properly.

Are you asking regarding this product?
    https://www.meguiars.com/automotive...easy-use-ceramic-wax-protection-g190526-26-oz

If so, I don't know the answer to your question; but if I was you I would email Meguiars and see what they think.

Hey guys. None of these are ceramic coating. They say "ceramic" in their names, but none of it is actual ceramic coating. Ceramic coating lasts years, not months. It's essentially a semi-permanent clear coat. Since it's basically a clear coat, you have to strip your paint of any glaze, wax or sealant on it. Then you should do a paint correction with compound and a finishing polish. Any imperfections underneath the ceramic coat will remain in place until you remove the coating by either compounding or wet sanding. Modesta is a professional line you can't buy your self, but there are other DIY kits are great such as gtechniq.

If you don't have a DA polisher, pads, etc, I wouldn't try to do ceramic coating on your own and let the professionals do it. Here's a good example at paint correction and ceramic coating.

If you aren't heavily wheeling your truck and getting deep pinstripes, I'd definitely get ceramic coating.

I would definitely remove any old wax. You want to ceramic coat the actual paint finish for the best and longer lasting results. Any auto psrts store should carry a spray on wax remover.

Diluted isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or rubbing alcohol wipe down will remove wax/oils from polish, much cheaper than anything from the store.

Resurrecting an old thread here - I don't do 'heavy wheeling' but I do collect plenty of pinstripes on forest roads. I've been researching this a lot debating wax vs. ceramic. Will ceramic look like shit if I routinely get pinstripes?

I moved on from this product a while ago. I actually used the real ceramic coating, Nano Bond. Excellent product when applied correctly. Prep being the main factor. It's been at least 2 years and looks pretty good but getting ready to redo again this fall.

I don't think the ceramic coating would be the issue. Just know ceramic coating is not designed to remove scratches. It is a protective coating. As far as protection if that's what your asking, it can't hurt but depends on the harshness of the trees. In my opinion. Hope this helps.

Ceramic won’t help on tree pinstriping. Best you can do is buff them out at the end of the season or get PPF.

I'm not necessarily thinking ceramic or wax will prevent pinstripes, I just worry the pinstripes will damage the expensive professionally applied ceramic and somehow look even worse than nothing or be costly to repair yearly or something, vs wax which is already going on twice a year.

Yeah since professionally done ceramic coating is basically like adding a tiny additional layer of clear coat, I would skip it if you’re actually going to get out and take your truck out on trails here. I’ve never done the semi-permanent type before but I imagine it’s not as easy to fix as your oem clear coat once it’s marred up.

Here is why you’d want to make an investment in having a professionally applied ceramic coating (of a reputable brand):

“By coating your off-road vehicle with Ceramic Pro, you are adding a hydrophobic layer of protection that permanently bonds to any substrate whether that be plastic, metal, paint, vinyl, cloth, etc. Which means every time you take your toy into the mud it is protected. Corrosion doesn’t have the opportunity to permeate the surfaces because water cannot penetrate the coating. Which means, ceramic coating is the right choice for all parts of your off-road vehicles, down to the nuts and bolts. In addition to keeping the enemy that is corrosion at bay, Ceramic Pro also makes it much easier to get your off-road vehicle shining after a weekend in the mud.” https://www.americandentspecialists.com/ceramic-coating-for-off-road-vehicles

Just a helpful note, after having done some reading and research.

I understand what semi permanent ceramic coating does. However, if you actually go on off roading trails around here you’re going to get a lot of pinstriping and marring of your paint due to the branches and what not. It’ll probably be ruined in a single trip. If you’re sticking to just mud or gravelly forest service roads then sure, go for it.

I used the chemical guys product and it worked well for what it was. IIRC the bottle mentions it only lasts somewhere around 18-24 months so I wouldn't say it is the same quality as professional ceramic coating, but it worked. Most of the results come through all the prep. I washed, clay bar, use an off the shelf medium cut Turtle Wax polisher with medium pad and a DA to remove all the swirls/pinstripes, then applied the ceramic coating. I also applied the ceramic coating to some wheels I bought last year and the tire shop had trouble with the stick on weights staying on the wheels so I'd say it definitely works. I frequent lakes, forest service roads and some trails occasionally. I also go hunting and snowboarding so my truck sees a lot of different use. I plan on reapplying the same chemical guys coating next spring as it has been a few years now. It helps keep the shine, adds a layer of protection, and not expensive enough to worry about it coming off on some pinstripe roads.

@Redsquirrel I usually go to White pass. It's the closest to me in the Yakima valley, and from what I've heard, less crowded than Snoqualmie. I'm also not the greatest at it so as long as there's blue or green trails, it works for me haha. Do you go out snowboarding/skiing?
