Battery Replacement Questions

G'day all,

When it's time to replace the battery, I believe all the "learning" your Tacoma ECU has done is lost. Too some that's just the cost of changing the battery, too others it's more of an irritant.

Is there a way to avoid the ECU "learned" memory loss when changing the battery?

Are there any other components affected/changed or returned to default settings during the battery change?

They do make an adapter that plugs into the OBD Port that allows you to hook another battery up during the swap to retain everything.

 

Good questions OP.. I happen to be in the same situation, i found out that the battery on my 2017 is weak and perhaps ready to go out.. besides the ECU i think the radio needs to be reprogrammed?

 

I have a second gen, this may be a 3rd gen thing. I've replaced the battery, and disconnect the battery for 24 hour or more doing work on the truck (e.g., winch install). Never had an issue other than to reset the clock.

 

Just replaced my battery. My radio presets were saved still.

Not sure about the ECU learning stuff though.

 

You can use a second 12v battery and alligator clips to your Pos & Neg leads before removing them from your old battery, or keep the system alive Via cigarette lighter / power port. The only issue is you need a second 12v power source besides your new battery, battery, charger, Etc..

 

Service manual states engine and transmission learned values do not reset when the battery is disconnected; only through Techstream.

You might have to initialize things like windows, moonroof, smartkey door lock, etc. Might lose some head unit stuff...
Do a search on "initialize" and "recharging or replacing the battery" in the owner's manual.

FYI I use this to at work to make sure there is constant power to the car even without the battery

 

Thanks for the replies. Common sense kinda suggests a small external 12vdc source would/could avoid any memory loss, but do not believe I've ever seen that topic discussed.

I had to disconnect my battery to clear a check engine light due to me replacing the oem gas cap with a locking gas cap ...everything was fine, except radio stations were buggered up.

 

Looking to replace the battery on my 2017 TRD OR. Have had to jump it the last two mornings with a portable jump start. Was thinking of upgrading to something with a bit more power. Any one have any experience with the EverStart Group 27 from Walmart?

My battery got drained when I hooked up my Subwoofer. Had to move that wire to a different fuse to stop the drain. Had absolutely no issue once I got it charged and running again. (Except for the radio station resets).

 

I've had several occasions where I had to disconnect my battery. (installing electrical components etc) The radio stations stayed programmed and as near as I could tell the ECU was unchanged. I did lose the gas tank cumulative mpg number but the running mpg stayed in tack. I only had the battery disconnected for max 30 minutes so maybe a longer time would have wiped out other settings. Donno
