If you read the development of that heloplane or aerocopter; I don’t think anyone would be over enthusiastic about getting in one....
Great concept, for sure, not sure that is the best delivery of the concept

I do know they have gotten much more reliable since I was in. But back then, fuck that noise, they were dropping like meteors. IIRC it seemed we lost several every year it seemed like.

Back in the early days of my civilian aviation career when I was a flight instructor, the Bell Textron Flight Test facility was on the other side of the runway from our facility at GKY. I saw a couple of them get balled up during flight tests.

It’s a very complex aircraft and the first gen version didn’t have enough hydraulic systems redundancy built in to the transition phase between stationary hover to forward flight or the reverse of that. Simple hydraulic failure in one system created catastrophic failures.

I fly with a guy now that was an Osprey driver and he said they are still pretty sketchy but much safer than the OG model.

From memory of what I read, they were originally meant to have fixed forward mounted .50 Cal machine guns and more armor, what they got was a rear deck mounted GPMG, due to weight issues. They kept compromising and compromising until they could get the thing to fly. It killed a bunch of test pilots as well. I was on a base in east Africa when they arrived for the first time, and they were quite impressive, but damn, give me chopper or C130. If you want short take off, give the C130 rockets....

This is my Tacoma. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My Tacoma is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me, my Tacoma is useless. Without my Tacoma, I am useless. I must drive my Tacoma true. I must drive straighter than my enemy who is trying to pass me. I must pass him before he passes me. I will ...

My Tacoma and I know that what counts in life is not the wheels we have, the noise of our exhaust, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the lift that counts. We will lift ... My Tacoma is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its shocks and its ball joints.

I will keep my Tacoma clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will ...

Before Toyota, I swear this creed. My Tacoma and myself are the defenders of my driveway. We are the masters of our trails. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until there is no frame , but rust.
    Amen.

You were a flight instructor, at an airport with an identifier of GoKillYourself????

Actually, I've flown through there a few times, ferrying a KW cross country. The FBO always took care of us.

I only toured their flight test facility one time. It's too bad the ARH-70 program failed. It would have been a great bird to fly.

Ive only been back there once since I moved on to bigger and faster aluminum tubes. Last time in there was a few years ago in the Global when the Super Bowl was at JerryWorld. It’s still a shit show of flight school shenanigans there.
