I wouldn't think you'd have a big rust issue in Mississippi, but with that mileage it may have spent some time farther north.

Dealer maintained and mechanically sound, I wouldn't be concerned buying that truck at all. Other comments have said try to get the dealer down to 16k, and I'd agree. Hell of a first truck!

That zip code dropped the price range another $500. So yeah, target $16-17K

Figured I’d share my buying experience. I had to go to my fathers state VA, to get my truck. I live in Denver so it’s cutthroat out her for Toyota’s. 2013 Sport 54k miles - talked an old friend down to $25k. Felt that was a decent deal since it’s kbb was just under 28k. I’d tell them 15k in cash (if this is possible) & they might bite. Don’t be afraid to walk away for a day or 2. That’s way to many miles for a price over 15/16k. Salesman’s only line with that is...but it’s a Tacoma. If it has rust I’d knock off some of the price & tell them

You being using CarGurus for price points in zip codes? It helped me look in other states etc

Carfax showing me it spent several years in Ohio.

Tacomas are Uber popular in this area, not sure this price has much room. Dealer will move it soon.

the rust issue is center of my radar screen right now

This is what my first truck looked like before it was totaled out by the insurance company and became my first truck as a hand-me-down from my dad. After it was wrecked the whole driver's side was hit bad enough that the driver door would not stay closed and I had to tie it closed with the seat belt. It became my status symbol in high school hahahaha!

Before I purchased my current truck and was looking I came across a beautiful truck in GA (I live in FL) that was immaculate according to the online pics. I called and asked the guy to take some pics of the frame underneath the truck and send them to me before I made the drive down. Everything about the truck was beautiful until he sent me the pics of the underside. Frame was rusting badly. I would not have even known to check it had it not been for this site. I did a carfax on the truck and found out it had spent several years in the rust belt.

OP, Be concerned, but don't panic over possible rust. I have pretty much the exact same truck and it has spent its entire life in the rust belt. (Full disclosure: It does have Ziebart undercoating.) Yes, there is some corrosion on my frame, but it's not bad. In fact it just passed a frame inspection at a dealership with flying colors. Here's my advice. I wouldn't worry too much about it, but have the dealer inspect and give it the latest corrosion prevention treatment if it qualifies. That way you and your son effectively have a 12 year (from the initial in-service date) frame warranty. That's pretty tough to beat.

BTW, my truck just turned 100,000 miles and it's been virtually trouble free. I wouldn't think twice about hopping in it tomorrow morning and driving across the country. Tacomas are that good if they're taken care of.

    Tks TS, that's great advice.

Dealer and I are in standoff at moment. Will update of course.

But. Ironically, at gas station this morning guy pulls up beside me in 2013 Prerunner w/TSS pkg - 81k miles. We get talking. He's ready to sell and was at dealership yesterday talking trade.

    Exchanged numbers, waiting on price....

    ( peeked underneath- no rust :) )

    Sounds like a plan...
You will be giving more than dealer trade-in value.

I hate this. I'd call & complain. They might lower the price because in this economy losing $$ isn't in the cards for any of us. They might get worried you go somewhere else!

    Update:

Just closed deal on the 2013 Prerunner w/82k miles. Clenn carfax, ZERO rust.

1.5k less than the TRD Sport

Its white with blacked out badging, bed cover,, AM wheells/ tires, immaculate interior, minimal exterior issues ( dent in rear bumper and paint chip on b pillar)

Very appreciative of every thought and comment you all shared.
