Just wondering, how many of you have rock chips on your truck? I got my truck like a month ago and the first day when I drove it home from the dealership I had to drive through an area where they were doing road construction on like 60% of the road back home and there was only one lane going in each direction so I couldnt escape the road construction. On my way home I heard a loud ding noise like if something hit the truck but when I got home I got out of the truck and looked it over and didnt see any dents or paint chips so I figured that it must have hit either the bottom of the truck or the front of the truck.

Fast forward one week later I was spraying the truck with some water using the garden hose on the "shower" setting and I notice a paint chip on my tailgate where the paint lifted off and left a small white circle... I think to myself "damn so I guess it did hit my truck after all" but I didnt see any other rock chips around the truck. Now yesterday (a month later) I was spraying my truck with the garden hose agian using the "shower" setting to clean some bird poop off the truck and I find another rock chip on the front passengers side door, this one has a center circle that looks like it went to the bare aluminum and two smaller dots under it. I havent even driven the truck anywhere yet besides driving it home from the dealership a month ago because of covid-19 and I didnt want to drive it anywhere until I got seat covers and door sills for it and it already has two two paint chips (one on the passengers side front door and one on the tailgate) and the truck is the off-road model too! I havent even done any off-roading yet

*sigh* how many of you out there have gotten paint chips/rock chips on your truck? im thinking of taking it to the dealership to get the rock chips fixed and then taking it to get wrapped in paint protection film after the rock chips are fixed.

Toyota and Japanese cars in general are known for having thin/soft paint. My Tacoma has a few chips, my wife's 2015 Subaru has plenty.

I would not recommend the dealer to fix anything paint related. Check out Dr. Colorchip. I've had good results with their kits in the past.

It’ll be a never ending battle OP. Two options: (1) Wrap it in a bubble and have a perfect truck, or (2) drive the hell out of it and have a smile on your face every day. I choose to drive. I have plenty....I even have two on my roof o_O

Do you usually try to fix them to prevent future rust or leave them as is?

The reason I wanted to get the dealership to fix them is because I wanted to see if they can level it out when doing a touch up so that the surface is even with the rest of the paint instead of leaving a small crater there and because since their the official dealership they probably have the paint that matches the best, I also sadly dont have an environment where I can paint it myself since I dont have a garage :-(

Damn, how long have you had them? have you tried fixing them? im wondering if it starts to rusts if I leave it uncured for too long.

What areas have you gotten rock chips on?

Rockers mostly and right on front of the back tires on my long bed. It happens. Do the best you can to mitigate and if you notice you have a new rock chip..get some touch up paint on it asap.

Anything to keep rust at bay.

Unfortunately I have not tried to fix them yet, though about some paint pens. They are small, some I've had for years and no rust at all. It's keep fairly clean and garage kept.

I live in AZ so rust isn't a huge concern for me. That being said I did use a paint pen, looks like shit and blotchy but it's better than the primer showing

After 1 year of ownership and 14K miles, mine has plenty of rock chips and rocky mountain pinstripes from narrow trails. Its a truck, just drive it and don't worry and get it dirty once in awhile. Too many shiny clean Tacoma's around for my liking....

you should look up dr color chip and understand how it works. it will fix any chips better than your dealer ever could and will not leave any blobs. it will be almost indistinguishable from more than a few feet away.

I don’t have rock chips but have lots of little paint chips from people who don’t know how to open their door in a parking lot.

I've been pretty disappointed with the paint quality on my truck. My previous truck, a 2001 Chevy S10 ZR2, was 18 years old and had gone through thousands of miles of heavy brush with very minimal scratches. I could slap some cheap wax on it, and it would shine like new.

My 2018 Tacoma, on the other hand, seems to get a scratch just from being scared by a branch that it got too close to. Any recommendations on how to give the paint job a little extra protection?

Might want to get some rock sliders as a deterrent to help with that in the future.

Paint protection film maybe? with paint protection film you wouldnt have to get the truck detailed as often too (maybe once a year instead of once every 3-4 months) so it saves money in the long run.
