My friends dad decades ago had a 1960's Chevy C10, manual on the column, pick-up. Every year he would coat the entire undercarriage and backside of the body panels with used motor oil, it was rust free till the day he traded it in on a new Chevy S10 pick-up.

You spend the time and money to fluid film. Its protecting. DO NOT WASH under until spring hits. I know its instinct to clean the salt off but the film is a barrier. Once the salt is done and spring has arrived DOUCHE AWAY!

 

IMO in snowbelt areas if you spray your truck with fluid film around Thanksgiving I'd bet most of its gone by Christmas

 

Not true. I am in MASSACHUSETTS. I did my truck with Fluid Film as soon as I got it and snow was coming that week. In the spring not only could I still see it, I could feel it if i wiped my finger on it. And when I power washed it the water sheeted off . When i was done the frame looked new and I could still get a slick feeling on my finger when wiping the frame. This year I used Wool Wax. I will give update In the spring.

 

Some areas that don't get washed while driving I'm sure are fine but areas like the wheel wells, leaf springs, rear diff etc will almost certainly be devoid of fluid film. I tried FF several times because I wanted it to work (Bought gallon and spray cans both) but after seeing it wash off over and over I now use it only for areas not getting direct water splash

 

We love Project Farm and were stoked to see him finally post a video on this subject. After a few weeks of going back and forth on various products, we ended up going with FF. The video 100% reinforced our decision for FF.

 

I put the CRC in my wish list. I think I like cosmoline better.

 

I'm curious how the video made you choose Fluid film?

 

Totally reasonable. There are lots of variables to consider when deciding on a product, so definitely do what you think is best for you and your Taco. Different strokes for different folks

 

It didn't...had already chosen FF (November '19) and this video (January '20) reinforced that it was a reasonable decision.

 

Its good stuff but I wish it had a spray tube to get in tight spots. I think its about the same as the amsoil MPHD but the MPHD has the little red spray tube and a bigger can

 

One thing I'll add is all of these are really messy to apply. So if your going to spray it under your taco while its in the grass or driveway make sure its your neighbors grass or driveway...lol

 

i have liked and tried best to keep a clean lean mean Tacoma machine for a very long time! i do not like tracking the slop on the top of the frame, wheel wells and mudflaps into the garage (unheated) all the time
1/4 century routine is gonna be hard to break!

btw, no pic on the flash rust event, i just hurried out this morning in about 0 F degrees and smothered some more FF on it ... i was barefoot too with slippers
that FF stuff turns a weird color at those temps from the rattle can, or maybe when it was applied directly to flash rust, anyways it should have kept the brine tracks off they just laid down here this afternoon for tomorrows pending storm
it was too dark out to tell yet

 

Also a fan of Krown.. I prefer this type when used in places like doors etc. Its thin enough that its sprayed in as a mist which get into and lubricate everything. Locks, window tracks , electrical connectors etc.
And it doesnt harden like the waxy product that just trap moisture in the bottom of door seams etc.. (like superior and ziebart that i tried a long time ago but never again)
It drips and creeps and gets into all the tight door seems.. Being heavier than water it fills the seams and forces the water out. If you live anywhere it freezes this is the deathtrap for your doors.
once you have water in those tight seams and it freezes it opens up the seams, ruins/cracks any paint/primer that was there... And every year this accelerates till the bottom of the doors are gone

the photo is of the door of my 2004 honda odyssey i just sold this winter. Went through 16 Toronto (canada) winters where there is almost more salt than snow.. And all the body panels are in the same condition, Seams 100% intact. . This is real world experience .

My Tacoma goes in once a year at $140 Cdn..

Some of the other product mentioned like fluid film etc look good as well and probably better on under body areas since they are thicker. . I would never use the old undercoat, its more of a noise reduction product and once it dries out and water gets up between it and the frame you are doomed.
