I'm making bolt on sliders and have them all tacked up. Now I have realized that I might not have done a good enough job removing the mill scale. I used an 80 grit flap disc and flat ground the metal but I noticed when I tacked them up I had a few tacks come loose. I wish I would have glass beaded the area before tacking them up.

I've read about muriatic acid and thought about spraying the areas to be welded. Being sliders, i'm concerned about the integrity of the welds.

Please share your thoughts on welding these out.

Here's another pic that might show the scale a little better.

    Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I usually grind them till I get to clean, shiny, metal.

Muriatic acid works, but it's a really slow process and you basically have to soak them for days.

If you have the ability to clean it a little better, I would. Since it’s only a few tack welds holding the support tube to the bracket, you can always cut them off and grind away the scaling properly. You’re in the home stretch and shouldn’t start taking short cuts now.

On the other hand, I’ve seen much worse metal welded together with little ill effect. It looks like a little surface rust as well? If you make sure to put a lot of heat into the weld to burn off any minute contaminates you should be ok. If you end up with a porous weld, then you’ll know right away that you should’ve cleaned it better.

I’d probably go with option one, honestly.

I usually use a 60 or 120 disk to take it down to the bare metal. If you're going to mig it I would deffently clean it up, if you're going to stick weld it I burn through it and call it a day.

I'm definitely going to Mig it. Thanks for the responses. That's a bummer that I did this. If I can knock then plates off, then I'll do that and start over by grinding the 6 HR brackets. The front two are CR.

I read that vinegar would take days to strip, but muriatic acid would only take 15 min.

I took a die grinder with a carbide conical to it and feel good about it now. Thanks for the input. Here's a before and after.20200504_090324.jpg 20200504_090833.jpg

It went well considering we didn't have any anti-splatter spray. 20200504_203016.jpg

Welds look pretty good. Maybe could've used a touch more heat focused on the plate as opposed to the tube but to be honest, its going to take one heck of a hit to break it either way. Should be plenty fine, I would rock that if it was my rig.
