Hey what’s up all? Truck is a 2015 trd sport DC auto trans. So I’ve been procrastinating on getting a set of tires seeing how mine were very worn. Leading into ordering a new set, I noticed that my truck wouldn’t engage into 4 wheel drive after turning dial to 4H. The light just flashed. I decided to bring it into a dealer because I still have a warranty on it. They diagnosed it and told me that because my tires were so bald, that the truck wasn’t letting itself engage into 4 wheel drive. I don’t know much about these trucks but I’ve never heard of such a thing. I just assumed they were selling me on some tires which I needed anyway. I can’t help but think that was some BS. Anyone of you guys ever heard of such a problem? Im picking the truck up in Tuesday and/or call tomorow. Tires were supposed to go on yesterday. Thanks

There is nothing in the 4wd system that would let it not engage with bald tires. I engaged mine with no rear DS attached and no wheels and tires on the truck. All that matters is A) the actuators for the ADD and T-case are moving and are able to move and B) the engagement is able to line up to shift the t-case into 4wd. Well and their could be electrical issues or computer issues from the switch to those actuators. 9 times out of 10 it's something to do with the actuators.

But you should get new tires for safety sake. Then take it to a shop and have them diagnose it for you. There are some threads on here for diagnosing as well as cleaning and fixing the actuators I was talking about.

It's false, and very likely the front differential actuator.

I would tell them they have waive diagnoses if the tires don't correct the issue.

Ok cool, I knew it didn’t sound right. I did get the tires because I really did need them but I don’t expect the 4 wheel drive problem to be solved that’s for shit sure. I bought one of those extra coverage third party warranties that Toyota sells you. wonder if there’s any chance this could be covered under that. My wife’s been telling me I was a sucker for buying that now for two years. Love to win that battle lol

My guess is it never made it to a real tech. Sounds like something a service writer made up.

There should be a guide in your sun visor, describing how to use the 4wd system.
