Buying a used 2016 OR?

A small local dealership has a 2016 DB off-road that they've offered for 28K.
It's a sweet truck: 6ft bed, running boards, premium audio/tech package/moonroof, factory bed cover, etc. It's loaded.

Only downside is that it's got just over 60K miles. I test drove it yesterday and the condition looked flawless. Very well maintained with full service records etc.

I'm not on a super tight budget but I am young and trying to be reasonably frugal, saving for a house/land in the future.

I know a lot of people on this form suggest buying new since these retain their value so well.
How I'm looking at it: Best case I could buy new and get something comparable for ~$35K (though likely more) so I'm basically saving $7K, that's money I could put into wheels/tires/suspension/etc.

Just curious if you guys have any input, especially in regards to the 2016 vs new models. I appreciate any info!

For 7 grand more buy a new one with no miles. 60k is no big deal but breaks, fluids and everything else get a fair amount of wear in 60k miles.

 

Just bought my '16 with 65k on it. Would do it again as the discount helps and I feel like I can treat it like a truck.

 

The truck you posted above with the options listed was a little over $39,500 MSRP in 2016. To build the same truck today would have an MSRP closer to $43,500. The 2020 would have a couple new doodads that were not available in 2016 like Apple Car play, led lights, etc... The base MSRP of the double cab long bed with 0 options is $37,575 in 2020. This info might help in your decision?

FWIW current Data says the 2016 is the worst year 3rd gen to buy (based on consumer complaints). For the best year, they rate 2014 (2nd Gen) as the best (again based on consumer complaints) I would be cautious buying a 2016 especially for that much $$

 

Better yet, buy a solid 10k car in cash and keep saving for that property. You would be glad you did in just a few years.

 

I debated new or used and ended up on new because the price of used was so high. No regrets.

 

Seems like a lot...I’d take 28k for my 17’ and go buy a new one!

some 16s had problems, like every other year. I know plenty of people with flawless 16s, the truck looks great, and if it fits the bill of what you want, go for it. It sounds like a good deal to me.

with a 16, you’ll be missing the power sliding rear window (can be added if you really want it), Toyota safety sense, LED headlights, Apple CarPlay, and power driver seat. They are pretty meaningless upgrades. The TSS is good to have, but not necessary. At the core, it’s the same truck. And if the previous owner drove it 60k miles. I doubt they had problems. If it was for sale with 10 or 15k, I’d be more hesitant.

I had a 2016 I traded 2 months ago that had 80K on it, I wouldn't be afraid of that truck at all, I would either get them closer to 26,500 or 27,000 or insist they put a fresh set of brakes, new plugs and fresh fluids (diffs and transfer case)...don't take the we service all of that stuff jazz on face value from them. Other than that, have fun with it!

 

Honestly dude, do some research into what kind of deal you can get on a new one. I got my 2020 TRD OR brand new for 31,600 with the Costco discount.

 

60k is a lot of miles for any used car. i'd buy new if it's just 7k more.

As suggested buy a $5-10,000 car save your $$ for the house and land. I guarantee when you look back it will be the best investment you could have made. Cars/Trucks come and go but being able to lay your head down in your own house is priceless. Plus get as much land as you can afford it gives you a huge piece of mind later.

 

With probably little to no options, he's looking at a fully loaded 2016, JBL, moonroof, dual climate control, heated seats, etc. Apples to oranges.

 

Hey bud, first 60k on these trucks is nothing, a few 2016s have made it way past 100k and saw a guy here post 200k, just routine maintainence. Most issues will appear in the first few years of ownership sounds like this one didnt have any of some of the first year quirks or were addressed by the prior owner. Second, dont let these guys get ya, you mentioned buying a house, the bank come mortgage time is not gonna wanna see a 35k loan so I get the desire to save the $7-8k and you are now within that post 3 year window were most of the residual value is lost on these trucks, resale / value will stay pretty decent here on out. I will say that price is high, especially in this market, I would offer them $26k which is the lower end of private party, bet they'll bite, at that point your saving a good deal of change, even with the rebate and strong negotiating a bare bones TRD OR 4WD auto is gonna be about $32-33k after negotiating. Attached the KBB for ya incase you didnt have it already. I've had a 12 tacomas, including the first year of the 3rd gens, 2016, I wouldnt hesitate. Some of the issues were: lower control arm whistle (fixed with plugs and TSB), 3rd brake light gasket leaking (also fixed with TSB and gasket), timing cover leak on some trucks (this continues though and have only seen a few), CPS sensor failure (part was updated late 2016), rear diff howl (also a TSB for this), transmission logic update (also TSB and addressed with update). Minor stuff, solid trucks, man, I wouldn't worry about that mileage especially on a 4 year old truck, 15k miles a year, not really high mileage.

 

I had a 2016 and a 2015 and a 2011, and a 2008 and a 2004, 2017, 2019 and 2020, the 16 was fine, it has that rating because at the time people complained about so much stupid sh*t mainly they didnt like the powertrain that it got that bad rating, TW was a sh*t show that year, every thread on here was some dude who this was their first truck, or moved from a fullsize and just tried to find every little thing wrong with the new model. Minus a few updates through the years, its the SAME damn truck as a 2020.
