    I highly recommend Plagues And Peoples by Dr Wm McNeil of the University of Chicago.
    It provides some much needed historical context.
    And it's a damned interesting read without medical jargon.
    Still relevant today...perhaps more than ever.

    Nature is "red in tooth and claw".
    I think that was Rudyard Kipling, but anyway...
    People who think we've "progressed" to the point of not being subject to the laws of nature...
    ...are simply wrong.
    They personally may be somewhat insulated, but it cannot last.

    We need to keep in mind that going to such extremes (as is common now) to keep people alive is an historical anomaly.
    We do it now because we can.
    That's not good enough.

    We must show compassion to the weak and cannot discard people just because they're old.
    We must do this to remain civilized.
    We do it not just for them, but for us.
    But neither should we expend resources to no purpose.

    As I said before my Mother and MIL were kept alive to the point of being miserable.
    It was expensive, and I'd say it was to no good purpose.
